Title: We Speak for Earth!
Description: After completing a four-day unit on environmental awareness as it relates to the events that occur in Dr. Seuss's The Lorax, students will create a short Public Service Announcement about deforestation, air pollution, and water pollution. The PSA will provide facts about these three concepts, display images of each, and propose a solution of some sort.

Title: What Makes a Leader?
Description: In this lesson, students will learn about various leadership qualities and historical American leaders. Each student will research an American leader of their choice and create a presentation about their life and impact on our country using the iPad app Educreations. Students will then participate in a class discussion about their thoughts on the researched leaders and how they can show leadership in their everyday lives.

Title: Informational Text- The Water Cycle
Description: This is an ELA- 2nd Grade lesson on informational text which integrates science and technology. Students will discuss in whole group informational text and its importance. They will use the Close Reading strategy to read informational text on the water cycle. Students will complete a KWL chart throughout the unit. They will discuss their findings in partners and work together to complete a water cycle graphic organizer. They will use the iPad to create a blog post and create an animated movie discussing the water cycle. This is a week long unit.

Title: Who's Side Are You On? 
Description: In this lesson students will compare and contrast two versions of The Three Little Pigs. Students will use the Story Kit app on iPads in groups to recreate the story of The Three Little Pigs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Students will write a brief explanation of which story they believe is true and why. Students will "judge" in "court" which version of the story is true based on evidence provided.

Title: Let Me Tell You A Story: Knowing the Difference Between Legends and Tall Tales.
Description: In this lesson, student's will compare and contrast legends and tale tales to understand what differentiates the two. Keeping your students engaged by leading discussions and using various media mediums is the key to a fun learning experience. (Requires access to YouTube.)

Title: Find the Fat
Description: Students will experiment with and evaluate healthy and unhealthy foods. Students will take digital pictures and view during a class discussion about fat content in foods. Students will watch a video about healthy eating and exercise and respond to the experience through writing and drawing.  This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Counting at Christmas
Description: In this lesson students will count and represent the cardinality of a given number.  Students will actively be engaged with virtual and tangible manipulatives. Students will be creating and sharing their artworks to represent a given number 0-20.

Title: Bullying is Whack...Get on the Right Track!
Description: In this lesson, students will research several prevention and intervention techniques of bullying.  By using the information gained through an interactive game on ways to prevent bullying, an interactive bullying book app, and various websites, students will create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to share this information with others.

Title: Shape Builders
Description: This is a lesson where students will be able to combine shapes to create new two-dimensional shapes.  Then students will be able to describe their new shape's attributes like whether or not it is curved, number of vertex, and sides. Students will need to have a strong understanding of their two-dimensional shapes and their attributes.


Subject: English Language Arts (K), or Technology Education (K - 2)
Title: Spotting Sounds All Around
Description: This is both a hands-on and technology based lesson where students can apply their knowledge of letter/sound relationships while incorporating the use of classroom technology. This Language Arts activity will allow for the students to work with a partner to find objects in the classroom that begin with the initial sounds of selected letters of the alphabet. The partners will use the classroom digital camera to photograph each of the items. The images will then be downloaded to the classroom computer to create a class Power Point presentation about letter/sound relationships.

Title: Growing in a Triangle
Description: Middle school students explore the Pythagorean Theorem by measuring and calculating diagonal lengths using the Pythagorean Theorem.  Students view an animated proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. They access an Internet site to view and discuss three examples of the Pythagorean Theorem.  Students apply knowledge of the Pythagorean Theorem to create a scale drawing of a plan to build a triangular raised bed garden for an outdoor classroom. Each group will present their plan to the class.

Title: Passport to the Great Wars
Description: In this unit plan students will be examining the causes, events, and consequences of the First World War. To launch this project students will be create passports that they will use throughout this unit and in the World War II unit. The content for this unit is taught via a layered curriculum document (attached). During the course of this project students may earn passport stamps by mastering content objectives (quizzes, tests, standards based assessments) and completing layered curriculum products (front page news articles, trench diagrams, personalities brainflips cards, quizlet vocabulary, etc.). After examining the causes and events of the war, students will  participate in a mock Treaty of Versailles (see ALEX Lesson Plan ID: 31048). Lastly, students will compose a five paragraph essay and answer the unit  Driving Question.

Title: Days of Our Medieval Lives  
Description: This project is designed for a class on block scheduling with class times ranging from 60-96 minutes. Students will be assigned a character in feudal society. Through this character, students will immerse themselves in medieval culture and "live" through various scenarios and historical events.  Students will journal daily to chronicle these events and will compile these journal entries and artifacts into a scrapbook. Lastly, students will dress in character and display their scrapbooks and other items that relate to their character in a booth at the Medieval Fair.

Title: Read Well Letter Chant Podcast
Description: This lesson guides students through creating a Podcast that provides video and audio of the Read Well Letter Chant.   Students take pictures of the cards and record the chant to go along with the cards.


Subject: Social Studies (10), or Technology Education (K - 5)
Title: Zagat's Guide to the Columbian Exchange
Description: This is a unit plan designed for a class that meets for approximately 60-96 minutes. It is also recommended that this project be used to conclude a unit that covers European exploration and the Columbian Exchange. Students will work collaboratively with a partner to create an "Old World" or "New World" restaurant menu. Old World restaurants must only serve foods that are made with ingredients that can only be found in "Old World" countries and vice versa. In this Students will be required to give the restaurant a historically referenced name and theme and use desktop publishing software to create their menu. Once menus have been produced, students will then orally present the menu to a panel of judges or their peers.

Title: Hurricanes
Description: This lesson starts out with a short video clip of Hurricane Ivan and shows the pattern it followed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that Hurricane Ivan struck and the eye traveled over Alabama. Discussion of hurricane facts follow. Students are given hurricane safety rules and procedures.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Description: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to the planets and sun in the solar system. Title: The Amazing Antigravity Stem
Description: This lesson consists of an experiment which will demonstrate how a plant uses its stem to carry water and minerals from the roots to the leaves and other parts of the plant. Students will then use their word processing skills to record what they know about the stem of a plant.

Title: Flutter By, Butterfly!
Description: This technology-based lesson will teach students the basic characteristics of different types of butterflies. It should be presented after a unit about the life cycle and habitat of butterflies. Students will use approved Internet sites to locate illustrations and facts about various species of butterflies. Students will work together and with teacher assistance to create a slideshow presentation that combines all of the species of butterflies the students locate.

Description: This technology-based lesson will help students develop their phonemic awareness by teaching students to hear the sounds in the -ig and -ip word families. It also leads students to apply what they have learned.

Description: Over this three-week unit, students will learn basic concepts about weather and the part it plays in their everyday lives. Finally, students will keep a daily log of local weather and put this information into a website.

Description: During this lesson, students will learn about Johnny Appleseed through a variety of sources. From the information, students will distinguish between fact and fiction. Title: Magnet Mania
Description: Students will discover the power of magnets through this interactive lesson. First, students will participate in a virtual field trip. Afterwards, students will create electronic posters about magnets using information learned during the field trip.

Description: During this lesson, students will use the computer to make an alphabet book using word processing software. Description: During this lesson, students will recall events from a story and describe the life cycle of the butterfly. Title: Our Solar System
Description: This is an introductory lesson for a unit on the solar system. Students will identify the order and characteristics of the nine planets. Description: During this lesson, students will actively listen to the story, The Little House, and determine the sequence of events. This lesson will be used to help students differentiate between natural changes and man-made changes in environments over time. Description: During this lesson students will listen to the story Max's Wacky Taxi Day by Max Grover and edit capitalization and punctuation taken from the story. The students will have the opportunity to practice their new skills by working on the Internet.

Title: Lucky Charms Graphs
Description: This culminating lesson will use Lucky Charms cereal for review of sorting, counting, tally marks, and graphing. This is a fun and tasty way for students to learn about math.

Title: Class Portrait: An Anthology In Words and Pictures
Description: Students will use a digital camera and word processor to produce an illustrated anthology of original poetry.

Title: What's Inside a Pumpkin?
Description: As part of a study on pumpkins, students will discover what's inside a pumpkin by observing a pumpkin, making individual booklets, and tasting baked pumpkin seeds.

Title: I Am Poems
Description: Students will write and illustrate I Am poems. An I Am poem is an 18-line, three-stanza poem which students write about themselves, or a real or fictitious character. Title: How Do Magnets Work?
Description: During this lesson students will examine magnets and determine that they have two poles (north and south). They will observe which poles attract and which poles repel.

Description: During this technology based lesson, students produce a book of the four seasons that relates to their everyday life. They learn many facts about seasons by navigating the Internet.

Description: In this lesson, students will learn to identify colors. The students will have the opporunity to explore colors by listening to a book, working on computers, singing songs and viewing colors on the Internet.

Title: Writing Poems that Rhyme
Description: This lesson uses technology in the presentation and publication of student poems. A slideshow examples of poems that rhyme and practice poems to finish with the students. It also outlines and models the steps of the writing process used to write a poem. The students may publish their poems by typing them on a slide and/or a newsletter template.

Title: Let's Get to Know Big Al
Description: During this lesson the students will read and discuss the story Big Al, by Andrew Clements. Students will identify the story elements of Big Al and complete a story element map. Students will also do a character analysis of Big Al.

Title: Mexico
Description: In this lesson, students explore Mexico by navigating the Internet and reading a variety of literature. Traditions, holidays, clothing, etc., of Mexico will be compared to American culture. A newsletter creates a way for students to share and educate family members about Mexico.

Title: Science Egg Experiment
Description: Students will participate in a hands-on activity that will determine which egg is easier to break, a hard boiled egg or a raw egg. Students will be introduced to the concept of hypothesizing and will be active participants in a simple science experiment. Using visual learning software, students will summarize the activities.

Title: Getting Into "Shape"
Description: Through observation and hands on activity, students identify plane shapes that make up geometric solids (space shapes).

Description: During this lesson, students will discover the differences in four types of weather disasters. They will collect information from selected Internet websites and create a multimedia presentation to demonstrate what they have learned.

Title: Traditions At Home and Around the World
Description: Each student will research his/her own family traditions and report findings to the class using presentation software. In partner groups, students will select a country to research. Their research will focus on traditions of a chosen country and will be compiled in brochure format.

Title: The Fabulous Four
Description: In this lesson, first grade students will learn about each of the four seasons. They will learn about different activities we engage in during each of the seasons. Students will also learn about the appropriate attire for each seasonal activity.

Description: This lesson provides students with the basic steps to using word processing. Students will use word processing software to publish a final copy of a book report. Students will review the main parts of a book report. This lesson will teach students technology skills they will use throughout their school career.

Title: The Writing Process: Brainstorming
Description: This lesson will be used to introduce the writing process. Students will learn about the first step, brainstorming, through webbing activities. Title: Vibrations We Can See, Feel and Hear
Description: This four-part lesson allows students to explore the question of how sounds are made. Using wooden rulers, tongue depressors and tuning forks, students will explore and experience sound. Students will use what they have learned to create instruments. Throughout the unit students will use technology to record their thoughts and observations.

Title: Luscious Layers of Life...A Walk Through the Rainforest
Description: This lesson provides students with an opportunity to learn about the animals and plant life that live in the various layers of the tropical rainforest. Students will view a slideshow with many different facts and pictures of the rainforest. They will also research animals and plants of the rainforest by searching Internet sites. Students will also share what they learn through an typed report.

Title: Come with Me to the Islands
Description: Students will explore several islands by watching a multimedia presentation prepared by the teacher on islands and how they were formed. Students will then use globes and maps to find various islands using cardinal directions given by the teacher. Students will work to make models of islands and draw and write about islands using software.

Title: Primary Technology Maps
Description: This hands-on, inquiry-based lesson combines maps skills which include identifying map elements, applying an understanding of cardinal directions, interpreting resource maps, and identifying a location. Students will have the opportunity to work with a group to research a specific continent and create a multimedia slide about the continent.

Title: Celebrating The Chinese New Year
Description: During this lesson, students will learn about the Chinese New Year celebration, including customs, symbols and their meanings, and roles of adults and children. Following the lesson, students will compare the celebrations in United States and China. The students will also draw a picture and write a sentence about their favorite holiday celebration.

Title: Eat Five A Day
Description: During this lesson designed for students with moderate disabilities, students will learn the importance of eating at least five fruits and vegetables a day. This lesson includes a field trip to the grocery store to purchase fruits and vegetables. Students will learn about the food guide pyramid during the lesson. Students will also navigate the Internet to learn more about fruits and vegetables.

Title: Seasons
Description: This early primary lesson teaches students how the earth's rotation around the sun results in the occurrence of four seasons. Through literature, art activities and technology students will explore the four seasons.

Description: This lesson will enhance the study of the color blue by providing a story, cooking experience and writing activity.

Title: Now and Then and Back Again: A Study of Transportation
Description: By using a slideshow presentation and a Conestoga wagon project, students will experience different ways people have conquered the human and social need for transportation in America. Students will begin by studying ancient and Native American cultures and progress to the pioneer’s use of land vehicles for exportation of goods. They will create their own small wagon by using very simple materials, and have a contest to see whose cart can carry the most pennies. Upon conclusion of the study, students will compare and contrast our transportation today to that of the past by creating a multimedia presentation.

Title: Creating Holiday Cards
Description: This lesson for incorporates painting and word processing software to create a card. Students will create original art work, insert it into a document, and print it. This can be done in a classroom or a lab setting with any age from second to fifth grade.

Title: My Book About Animals
Description: This lesson will allow students an opportunity to create a book about the different characteristics of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and insects. Title: Oh, Baby!
Description: In this lesson, students will learn to identify baby farm animals. The students will view different pictures of baby farm animals and learn many characteristics of baby farm animals.

Description: Students will create their favorite zoo animals using play dough. Using a word processor, students will create a sentence or short story about their animals.

Description: Students will survey teachers in order to find out the titles of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. They will work in small groups and use digital cameras to take pictures of each teacher and his/her favorite book.

Title: Farm Animals Thematic Unit
Description: Students will participate in a thematic study about the farm. They will work cooperatively to create a book about farm animals using technology resources. This project will take approximately 5 days and can be used in conjunction with or at the end of a farm unit.

Description: During this lesson, students will learn the different sounds vowels make. They will view a slideshow presentation that teaches them the different sounds. Students will also navigate the Internet to practice identifying the different vowel sounds.

Title: Pretty Cool Penguins
Description: This lesson is part of an interdisciplinary primary life science unit addressing adaptation and habitats by focusing on penguins. This lesson is primarily technology based and should take place near the end of the unit, after students have had time to become thoroughly familiar with penguins and are ready to synthesize their learning.

Title: Butterfly Life Cycles
Description: This unit introduces students to a study of life cycles by having them examine the life cycle of a butterfly. The students will observe, record and describe the changes in caterpillars as they become butterflies. The teacher will conclude the unit by having each student prepare a slide about a butterfly he/she has researched for a class slideshow presentation about butterflies.

Title: Spine Labels - What are they and why are they there?
Description: This is a first or second grade library skills unit, conducted by the librarian with help from the art, computer, and homeroom teachers. It is possible to use only certain parts of this unit as a stand-alone lesson for use in the library, however, standards addressed assume completion of entire unit.

Description: Students will follow simple research steps in the school media center and on the Internet to complete a poster on an assigned state by identifying the state's symbols and agricultural products.

Description: Students will be introduced in this lesson to the numerals zero through five. Students will associate the numeral with the correct number of objects. Description: In this lesson students will be given the opportunity to practice using mathematical vocabulary to describe a set of data. Following data collection students will also create a graph using the computer.

Description: What is a habitat? In this lesson, students will identify that a habitat has four elements, food, water, shelter, and space. Description: The students will go on an in-school scavenger hunt to get to know the many kinds of people that make up an elementary school community. Title: Nouns, Verbs, and Describing Words
Description: This language arts lesson uses technology to assess students' understanding of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Each student will use a digital camera to take a picture at school. He will then write a descriptive sentence about the picture using a word processor. Students will use a specified colored font to identify the nouns, verbs, and adjectives in the sentence.

Description: During this lesson students will learn about being respectful. Through different stories, graphic organizers, and acting, students will gain a true understanding of respect.
