Title: Popping HOT
Description: In this lesson students will discover the different forms of heat transfer such as conduction, convection, and radiation and that these forms can be demonstrated by popping popcorn.  Students will learn the health benefits of popcorn, one of America’s favorite snacks.  Students will also use fun facts about popcorn to solve math problems.  This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Give That Character a Voice with Voki!
Description: This lesson fuses fictional literature with technology through a project-based experience.  Students will use the free online resource Voki to bring a fictional character to "life" and deepen their understanding notion of character, character traits, and the importance of character development within stories. They will create an avatar, compose and edit a script, and supplying the voice befitting the character.

Title: Puzzling Pangaea
Description: In this lesson students will work collaboratively to research information in order to prove or disprove if a super continent ever existed. Students will create a model of Pangaea to show how their research findings ‘connect' in a puzzle format. Students will conduct a survey to find out their peers opinion of Pangaea and communicate the results in graphs.

Title: Creating a Prehistoric World
Description: In the lesson, students will research, create, and present knowledge gained about Prehistoric and Historic Native Americans in Alabama. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.

Title: The Day We Ate Donuts
Description: Introduce students to scientific inquiry using nutrition as the guideline.  This lesson provides a hands-on way for students to experience the effects of different nutrition choices.

Title: The Evidence of Chemistry
Description: The students will learn to identify evidence that a chemical reaction has taken place.  They will use the Internet to research evidence and find examples.  They will look around their school and neighborhood for examples. They will perform experiments in the science lab. The students will make a podcast, slideshow presentation, or a digital story board to show the types of evidence they collected and examples of each.

Title: Field Challenge Strategy Game: Plant Adaptations
Description: Use a game to challenge students to understand the fight for sunlight, nutrients, and water. This simple strategy game encourages students to balance ability with need in taking over an open field. Succession is the end game.

Title: Topography of Fruit
Description: This is an attempt to help students understand contour lines in map-making through the vector of digital photography.  This hands-on activity will create an art piece out of fruit that will be analyzed to create topographic maps.

Title: Race for Life: Plant Adaptations
Description: This is an outdoors, hands-on activity.  Create a short race course to engage students in physical activity while drawing comparisons to the plant kingdom. This activity serves as an introductory to the impact small changes can have on the ability of a plant to compete for sunlight, soil, and water. Each race serves as an analogy to a specific type of adaptation.

Title: What's Your Guess? (Probability)
Description: This lesson will allow the student to experience  a series of informal comparisons,  The student will explore the chances of various outcomes of an event. The student will use vocabulary associated with probability.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Up or Down? (Rounding Numbers)
Description: This is a lesson in which students identify and demonstrate usage of the rules for rounding numbers to the nearest 100.  Once the rules are internalized the students can extend the process of rounding number  to 99,000,000.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: And the Point Is???
Description: Students will identify and describe the parts of a coordinate grid. Students will explain how to find and graph ordered pairs on a coordinate grid.  Using a word processing program, students will create a coordinate grid activity sheet.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Maybe - Maybe Not  (Probability Introduction)

Description: This is a fun way to incorporate fun with addition and subtraction fact families.  The students will have fun matching facts and making a happy home.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: I'm Into Money!!!
Description: Many students come to third grade needing to review and/or be retaught counting money and making change.  This lesson will begin with a review of counting money.  It will then introduce making change.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Fatty Snacks
Description: "Fatty Snacks" is an inquiry-based lesson which allows students the opportunity to collect data related to the nutritional value, more specifically fats, of favorite snack foods. Using the scientific method, students test favorite snack foods to determine the fat content of each tested snack food. Using the data, students draw conclusions and make decisions based on results. Using Excel software, the students create appropriate graphs to represent their data and show comparisons of the different tested snack foods.

Title: POPPIN' FOR POPCORN!
Description: Students will be using different flavors of popcorn to conduct surveys in class to create graphs. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: What's Your Favorite Chocolate Bar?
Description: This lesson allows students to complete a school wide survey. Students will complete the survey to find out which candy bar, between Snickers, Butterfinger, Twix, Hershey Bar, Crunch, and Other, is the favorite among students and faculty. Students will create different kinds of graphs (horizontal bar graph, vertical bar graph, and tally chart) using Microsoft Excel to show their results.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Out Of This World
Description: During this lesson, students will begin to realize that the solar system is a vast unexplored frontier. Students will have the opportunity to explore the different aspects of our solar system.

Title: Shoals Area Landmarks and Sites of Interest
Description: In this lesson students choose a local landmark or site located in the Shoals area and research that site's contribution to history. Students demonstrate their knowledge of a specific Shoals area landmark or site by creating various presentations showing why these landmarks and sites attract people from all over the world.

Title: Creating a Website on Explorers
Description: After researching famous European explorers and choosing the most important ones, students create a web page highlighting European explorers and the discoveries and impact these explorers had on the world. The web page will contain a survey which will allow visitors to select their "Explorer Idol" after reading about each explorer.

Title: Propaganda & Persuasive Techniques: Do You Buy It?
Description: During this lesson, students have the opportunity to learn about basic persuasive techniques employed in advertising. They will collect and analyze data about advertising in general. They will share examples of persuasive techniques used in advertising. Then, they have the opportunity to create their own "products" and use one persuasive technique in original "commercials." Students perform their commercials in a live teleconference, while audience members try to guess which persuasive technique is used.

Title: Room Budget
Description: During this technology-based lesson, students learn the importance of planning a project while focusing on a budget. They focus on money and calculation skills to help them stay within the budget. Students use Internet sites to locate the information they need to design a new room.

Title: Bu- Bu- Bubbles!
Description: Students will employ the Scientific Method, measurement skills and spreadsheet software to generate and report relevant data. The data generated from this activity is used to illustrate the need for consumer awareness and the strength of advertising.

Title: My Bad Day
Description: During this writing lesson students go step by step through the writing process to create a story about a bad day. Students use graphic organizers and Internet resources to help improve their writing skills.

Title: Is That a Whale?
Description: This lesson will increase student knowledge of whale anatomy and habitat while using the Internet for information gathering.

Title: Geo Picture
Description: During this lesson students use their imagination to create a fascinating picture using only straight lines. Students have the opportunity to illustrate their designs on an interactive Internet site.

Title: Let's Identify and Classify
Description: During this hands-on lesson, students learn about scientific classification by navigating the Internet. They will examine a variety of potato chips in order to create their own classification key.

Title: Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers
Description: During this technology based lesson, students learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers by exploring websites on the Internet. Students demonstrate their knowledge of fractions by participating in practice activities on the Internet.

Title: Proper Noun Race
Description: During this lesson, students will review nouns and identify common and proper nouns in context. A short story will be written using both types of nouns. An interactive Internet site will be used to reinforce the lesson.


Subject: Social Studies (4), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: Historic Indian Tribes of Alabama
Description: This lesson will focus on researching, analyzing, and comparing the culture of four Indian tribes from Alabama's history. The rich culture of the Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Indian tribes contributed to the rich history of Alabama. Collaborative research in small groups will culminate in presenting knowledge with a variety of visual and oral presentations.

Title: What's The Weather Like?
Description: Students will use the Internet to compare the weather forecast for their city with other cities throughout the United States each week during this unit. Data will be charted for a five-day period then analyzed and discussed.

Title: Let's Graph
Description: This lesson can be implemented during a study of different types of graphs that are used to display and organize data. Students collect and display data in a bar graph.

Title: Pendulums Swing Into Motion
Description: This lesson will allow students in groups to describe the relationship between energy, work, and force through the use of pendulums. The results will be reported through a graphing activity as well as a paragraph written and printed on the computer.

Title: Let's Go Spreadsheet Silly
Description: In this lesson students will become familiar with spreadsheets. They will learn how to collect and input data into a spreadsheet and how to create graphs from the spreadsheet data.

Title: Wandering Alabama
Description: This lesson is a fun fact gathering mission! Alabama is rich in history, museums, natural and manmade attractions, and some just plain wacky attractions. Students will work in collaborative groups to create a guide to sites in Alabama with descriptions, map locations, expenses involved, and other useful information. Come on! Let's explore Alabama!

Title: Charting the Weather
Description: During this lesson, students will gather data from temperature and water gauges set up on the playground to learn about weather patterns. Then students will build a spreadsheet with data related to temperature, wind direction and amount of rainfall. Once students have gathered and recorded the data they will write about how the weather has affected them and the playground.


Subject: Mathematics (3), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: Make a Leaf Graph
Description: This lesson should be taught during a unit on plants or trees. During this lesson students will collect leaves and use rulers to measure each leaf. The students will have the opportunity to create a hand-made bar graph as well as a computer-generated bar graph. They will also compare a bar graph to a pie graph to determine which graph is easier to read.

Title: Comparing Modes of Transportation
Description: In this lesson students will visit different websites in order to decide the best mode of transportation from their home town to New York City. Students will graph the results and write a persuasive paper.

Title: Jack's Beans
Description: During this lesson, the classic story of Jack and the Bean Stalk will spark an interest in plants with students. Students will explore the Internet, take a nature walk, and make observations to learn more about plants. A brochure will demonstrate their knowledge of plants.

Title: Look To the Future
Description: This lesson is designed to encourage self-analysis of interests and skills as related to occupations, and to encourage future thought about a career identity or role. This lesson will allow students to organize career information to create a slideshow presentation that includes a scanned image of a drawing as they might see themselves in a future occupation. Students will also have the opportunity to create a newsletter help-wanted ads section using desktop publishing software to encourage exploration of various occupations.

Title: Better Health in Computer Technology
Description: In this lesson students will learn the rationale for proper hand, eye, and body mechanics when using a computer. Students will discover how to properly use a computer by viewing a presentation, researching the Internet, and by creating their own slideshow presentation.

Title: Time Flies
Description: This lesson plan is one of the first in a unit on telling time which addresses the following content areas: language arts, math, science, social studies, and technology. Students will read several resource books to gather information. They will then sequence information in a timeline. The final project will be a slideshow presentation.

Title: Native Americans
Description: During this lesson, students will recognize that Native Americans were the first inhabitants of our country. They will locate on a map where different tribes lived and compare and contrast different tribes' basic needs and customs.

Title: Sugar Detectives
Description: During this lesson, students will learn to make wise decisions concerning the snacks they eat. Students will learn to read food labels and measure the sugar content in foods. Students will be able to determine if they are practicing healthy eating by creating a food guide pyramid of their eating habits. Students will also create a multimedia presentation to demonstrate what they learned.

Title: Just Plain Living
Description: Students work through a teacher-prepared Webquest in order to learn about the art, food, shelter, clothing, etc. of the Plains Indians. Internet resources are used to collect information in order to make group presentations to the class. Students have the opportunity to decide among several projects to complete in order to demonstrate what they have learned.

Title: Probability Paper Bags
Description: The students will use paper bags with color tiles to calculate probability of colors. This is a fun activity to use with the students. The objectives of probability are taught in a non-threatening way.

Title: How Do Citizens Make Government Work?
Description: This five-session unit will provide hands-on opportunities for students to explore local, state and national governments. In the process, students will use technology and print media to learn about the leaders of each level of government and explore citizenship as a way to make a difference in their communities and nation.

Title: Antarctic Adventures!
Description: This month-long ongoing lesson will give the students opportunities to learn more about Antarctica. They will investigate and research specific information and use it to create a notebook and an information table.

Title: Honey Bees
Description: The students will do research to learn the various functions of bees within the hive and understand the process of making honey. Students will use numerous resources to find their information including the Internet, library books, encyclopedias, and their science textbooks.

Title: Dream Vacation
Description: This unit teaches students to plan a trip with an itinerary, remain within a budget, and work cooperatively. It is a technology-based project that combines a study of mathematics, economics, geography, and social studies.

Title: Digital Slideshows: PowerPoint for the Novice
Description: Students will learn how to use presentation software to enhance learning. Student-created digital slideshow presentations can span the curriculum. Each student will prepare a presentation in one of the following curriculum areas: reading/literature, mathematics, social studies, or science. The presentations will be created in the classroom or in the technology/computer lab. Students will access the Internet, Alabama Virtual Library, and local libraries for their information.

Title: Capturing A Moment In Time
Description: This lesson allows the students to explore imagery poetry through the use of a digital camera. The students visualize an imagery poem then look at a painting that pays tribute to the poem. Then the students think of a moment in time important to them, take a picture that represents it, and write a poem about it.

Title: Social Studies 3rd Grade Career Day
Description: The students will develop an understanding of specialized work and learn more about a career they choose to research. The students will use a digital camera and scanner to enhance their career notebook/portfolios. The students will use various sources to gather, interpret, and analyze information.


Subject: Science (3 - 5), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: A Water Dilemma - Mapping Dragonfly Pond
Description: This is a hands-on, technology rich lesson involving wetlands and the effects humans and human development have on these precious ecosystems. This is a follow-up lesson to a wetlands introduction and discussion.

Title: Do You Have a Babushka?
Description: This lesson will familiarize students with the author Patricia Polacco. Students will use appropriate resources to gather information about Polacco, categorize the information, and record it in a graphic organizer (concept map).

Title: Writing with Technology
Description: The students will use technology (portable keyboards) to write a narrative.

Description: This is a hands-on lesson that allows students to gather their own data before finding the mean. This activity is the culminating activity of a mean, median and mode unit.
