Description: This lesson is designed to help students become comfortable with idioms.  Students will work closely with idioms to discover meanings and present them to the class.  Students will use technology to present the information.

Title: What's Your Point?: Discussing the Different Perpectives Between the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs
Description: During this lesson, students will compare and contrast different point of views from the fairytale, “The Three Little Pigs” and the story, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” by Jon Scieskra. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their opinion on the two stories. Students will then work in groups to create their own podcasts where they are to imagine they are a reporter interviewing the wolf or the three pigs.

Title: What if you were Rosa Parks?
Description: This is a Social Studies lesson plan used to teach about the Modern Civil Rights Movement in Alabama. This lesson plan focuses on Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. Technology is integrated in the lesson plan by using capzles to create a digital story book.

Title: Compare and Contrast: Okie Dokie! Let’s Make a Voki!
Description: This lesson is designed to help students compare and contrast two different characters in a story. Students will discuss two of the main characters of the book Shadow in small groups. Students will work with a partner to complete a graphic organizer documenting similarities and differences between Matt and Aman, the two main characters. After students complete a Venn Diagram with their partner, they will independently form scripts (using complete sentences) for their Voki characters.  Students will create and present their Vokis to the class.

Title: A Step Into the Boston Massacre
Description: In this lesson, the students will learn about the Boston Massacre and how this event led to the American Revolution. The students will understand that when governments are unjust, sometimes people revolt. The students will compare and contrast the two sides of the American colonists in the 1770’s, “Colonists Should Fight the British for Independence” versus “Colonists Should Not Fight the British for Independence.” In addition, the students will create a web video on one event that led to the American Revolution. This lesson is designed to integrate technology, such as WeVideo, with social studies.

Title: Similes Made With a Smile
Description: In this lesson, students will be introduced to the definition of a simile. They will watch the teacher model how to find a simile in a text, as well as determine its meaning. Students will also be required to create a simile of their own.

Title: Book Boxes: Analyzing Elements of a Story
Description: In this lesson, students will listen to a read aloud and view a model of the project expected related to the first read aloud.  Students will then complete a group project based on a story read as a class. (This can be done as a read aloud or in literature circle groups.)  The books used in this particular activity are Bud, Not Buddy and The Watsons go to Birmingham.

Title: Who's Talking?
Description: This lesson provides an opportunity for the students to write a biography and provide an excerpt of the bio using a Web 2.0 tool. This is a week long activity using the 5 stages of writing. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Make your Holidays Ornamentally Cellular
Description: During the holidays, the students will use clear ornaments and other craft materials to create plant and animal cells. They will be able to identify the parts of the cell and identify its functions.  This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Alabama's Prehistoric Indians
Description: In this seven-day lesson, students will explore, in depth, the lives of prehistoric Indians who lived in Alabama. Then students, working in cooperative groups, will choose one tribe to focus on as they create a musical parody about the tribe they have chosen.

Title: Wanted: Angles of all Sizes! 
Description: In this lesson, students will explore straight, right, acute and obtuse angles. Students will go to the playground to search for angles. The students will use digital cameras to record their findings. They will use their findings to create a Power Point to present to the class.

Title: Bullying is Whack...Get on the Right Track!
Description: In this lesson, students will research several prevention and intervention techniques of bullying.  By using the information gained through an interactive game on ways to prevent bullying, an interactive bullying book app, and various websites, students will create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to share this information with others.

Title: Master of Disaster (Elementary Grades)
Description: Students will research natural disasters and their impact on people.  They will work in teams to design a disaster preparedness guide to share with the community to reduce the impact of a natural disaster utilizing various creativity apps on the iPad.

Title: Exploring the world with P.W. Cracker!
Description: This lesson can be completed in a whole group or small group setting. After reading the book “P.W. Cracker Sees the World,” the students will complete an inquiry project that connects social studies/geography to what they read in their story.

Title: Are We There Yet?
Description: In this lesson, students will work collaboratively to solve subtraction word problems.  Students will solve distance word problems to find the difference between any 3-digit number and 1,000.

Title: Fast Track to Multiplication Facts
Description: In this lesson, students will learn how to use tricks to master multiplication facts. Students will be introduced to the only 15 facts they must know to master multiplication facts through 9X11 with the prerequisite that they know the 0's,2's,5's,10's, and 11's.

Title: Sign Shapes
Description: Students will take a field trip (or use computer) to locate 9 different shapes in the form of store signs. They will use digital cameras to take pictures (or copy and paste pictures) of the shapes and then create a slide show using the pictures. On each page of the slide show, the student will name the shape, number of sides, angles and vertices and also draw lines of symmetry.

Title: Angle Scavenger Hunt
Description: In this lesson, students will explore straight, right, acute, and obtuse angles.  Students will go on a scavenger hunt throughout the school to search for examples of these types of angles.  The students will use digital cameras to record and communicate their findings.

Title: Nursery Rhyme Word Problems
Description: In this lesson students will create basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems using common nursery rhymes.  Students will distinguish the key elements of word problems and incorporate those elements into a nursery rhyme.

Title: Little Red Riding Hood's Journey to Grandma's
Description: The students will listen to the story of Little Red Riding Hood and work subtraction word problems connected to the story. The problems are related to distance traveled. They will work cooperatively with partners and share subtraction strategies with their peers. At the end of the lesson they will work a subtraction story problem and show strategies for solving.

Title: Cows on the Clock
Description: In this lesson students will calculate elapsed time using the storybook Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. Students will identify the time pasted between two given times in a.m. and p.m.

Title: Creating Games from ”SCRATCH”:  Computer Programming
Description: This lesson is a collaborative lesson between Margaret Rice and Kay Emfinger.  In this lesson, students will learn how to use Scratch, a computer programming language.  Students will then work collaboratively to create an educational game using Scratch.   This is a hands-on lesson.  Students will use conditionals and operators in their game design. Students will use 21st century skills that include Information & Communication Skills, Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills, and Interpersonal & Self-Directional Skills.

Title: My adventure with Lewis & Clark
Description: Over the course of five days, students will create a daily journal in the style of Lewis and Clark. At the end of the week, the students will create a video using their Flip cameras recreating their journals.

Title: Are You Down with Describing Nouns?
Description: This unit is a fun, exciting, and engaging unit that uses many 21st century tools to help students working in collaborative groups understand what an adjective is and how adjective use is vital to making writing interesting.  Furthermore, students will use technology to research and explore the use of adjectives in their daily writings, readings, and environment and determine how adjective use can influence consumers.

Title: Give That Character a Voice with Voki!
Description: This lesson fuses fictional literature with technology through a project-based experience.  Students will use the free online resource Voki to bring a fictional character to "life" and deepen their understanding notion of character, character traits, and the importance of character development within stories. They will create an avatar, compose and edit a script, and supplying the voice befitting the character.

Title: Newton's Three Laws
Description: This technology-based lesson will review Newton's three laws of motion. After reviewing the laws, the students will be divided into three groups. Each group will be assigned one of Newton's laws and asked to create a presentation demonstrating their assigned law. The students will present their law to the class and be scored using a rubric.

Title: Doppler is Warning You!
Description: This lesson plan is designed to involve students in research about the impact Doppler Radar has made in regards to weather. An original video podcast will be created by groups to teach others about Doppler Radar and the effects it has had on communities in Alabama specifically.

Description: This lesson will bring students through a series of activities so that they will be able to make an informed decision as to whether man should explore space.

Description: The students will learn to identify evidence that a chemical reaction has taken place.  They will use the Internet to research evidence and find examples.  They will look around their school and neighborhood for examples. They will perform experiments in the science lab. The students will make a podcast, slideshow presentation, or a digital story board to show the types of evidence they collected and examples of each.

Title: Yo! The Slaves Have Gotta Go!
Description: In this lesson, students will explore the events leading up to the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation.  Students will work collaboratively to research and report their findings.

Title: "My Three Words" vodcast compilation or series
Description: Students create vodcasts that use the format of the Good Morning America feature "My Three Words".  This works well as a culminating activity for a unit or a technology-based project.  In groups, students  select a three word phrase to communicate a specific topic/idea, then create a storyboard and choose appropriate multimedia elements to best express their chosen phrase.  They use a variety of software applications to find or create images and produce a video file.

Title: Topography of Fruit
Description: This is an attempt to help students understand contour lines in map-making through the vector of digital photography.  This hands-on activity will create an art piece out of fruit that will be analyzed to create topographic maps.

Title: Machines all Around Us
Description: Student will examine different rooms in the school looking for simple machines. They will use digital cameras to take pictures of the simple machine they have found in the school and Microsoft PowerPoint to create a presentation of their findings. This lesson was created by Miller, Gladden, and Watson- Oscar Adams Elementary School Tech Team.

Title: Wired for Learning
Description: As part of a unit on electrical circuits, students will work in collaborative groups to create a video of how to construct parallel and series circuits. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Beyond the Earth Part II
Description: A continuation of Beyond the Earth Part I.  As part of a unit on the solar system, students will choose a component of the solar system to research.  Students may use a variety of resources such as the Internet, books, and reference materials. Once the research is complete, students will work in collaborative groups to design travel brochures using a desktop publishing program.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: 3,2,1…Spinoff
Description: As part of the study of Space, the students will do research on and create a podcast/vodcast about spinoffs developed from space exploration.  In groups, students will use various websites to acquire information about technological advancements that have been made over time. Groups will then write scripts and compose a podcast/vodcast to be shared on the school’s website.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Beyond The Earth Part I
Description: Students will access prior knowledge of the solar system by completing a graphic organizer.  After participating in a teacher lecture and whole group discussion, the students will work in collaborative groups to create a computer-generated drawing of the solar system.  Students must label each part and write a brief description of it.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Angles in the Mix
Description: In this lesson, students will observe art paintings for angles - straight, right, obtuse, and acute. Using digital cameras, students will find "art" in their environment, which displays those same types of angles. They will use their photos to create a Photo Story describing the angles in their environmental art and share it with the class. Lastly, students will choose one of their photos to paint and label the angles found in their art.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Aunt Chip and the Triple Creek Dam Affair by Patricia Pollaco
Description: In this lesson, students will read and summarize the book by pages. After publishing, students will use their slides as sequencing exercises. This lesson plan can be adapted for any grade level or book.

Title: Who Am I? Learning With Biographies
Description: Students often have difficulty differentiating between genres of books in the library media center. During this lesson, students learn to identify a biography and understand the types of information included in this genre. Students will have the opportunity to complete and present a multimedia autobiography, then research a notable person and complete a project describing that person's achievements.

Title: Telling It the Digital Way: Stories of Sports Spectacular Stand-outs
Description: During this lesson students design, develop, produce, and present a five-minute biographical video highlighting the life of a famous sports spectacular stand-out such as baseball's great Babe Ruth.

Title: Whales, Whales, Whales!
Description: During this lesson, students work with other students from another school to collect information about different species of whales. Students will have the opportunity to discuss the differences via video conferences. Students work together to develop a plan to help conserve whales.

Title: From Tyranny to Freedom
Description: During this lesson students will have the opportunity to research famous battles of the American Revolution and document these battles in a timeline, which they will construct. Students will also create a slideshow presentation about the American Revolution to be shared with classmates.

Title: Shoals Area Landmarks and Sites of Interest
Description: In this lesson students choose a local landmark or site located in the Shoals area and research that site's contribution to history. Students demonstrate their knowledge of a specific Shoals area landmark or site by creating various presentations showing why these landmarks and sites attract people from all over the world.

Title: Creating a Website on Explorers
Description: After researching famous European explorers and choosing the most important ones, students create a web page highlighting European explorers and the discoveries and impact these explorers had on the world. The web page will contain a survey which will allow visitors to select their "Explorer Idol" after reading about each explorer.

Title: Parent Brochures for English Language Learners
Description: In this lesson English Language Learners will design and publish a brochure that introduces the school to their parents. The brochure includes English and native language translations, pictures, and explanations of school function. The lesson can be adjusted for any grade level.

Title: Writing with Presentation Software
Description: During this lesson students use their imaginations to create short stories. Then they create alternative endings to their classmates' stories. Students present their stories using presentation software.

Title: Me in a Box
Description: During this lesson students develop a sense of self awareness and appreciation for their own individuality and uniqueness. Students use graphic organizers to identify personality traits and collect items and pictures that represent the traits. The class has fun trying to identify to whom each box belongs before they are presented.

Title: Narrative Writing: "A Day in the Life of ..."
Description: In this lesson, students will use what they have learned about narrative writing in an authentic situation. This is part of a welcome packet for students who are new to the school. Students will work in groups to conduct research and compose narrative essays telling about a typical day in the life of a kindergartner, first grader, etc. The project will culminate in the creation of a brochure and slideshow presentation that can be used by teachers to introduce new students to their class.

Title: What is It?
Description: Technology is incorporated into this "riddle" lesson as students select an image to capture using a digital camera. This is a fun lesson designed to introduce students to the use of digital cameras. After editing the picture, they practice their writing skills to construct a simple sentence to give a hint of what the image might be.

Title: Investigating the Weather
Description: During this lesson, students will study, record, and predict weather. Students will work in groups to create a weather word wall, research and make a barometer, and create a video about weather. Students will also use the Internet to learn more about weather.

Title: Warm, Cool, Warm, Cool
Description: During this lesson, colors will become more meaningful to students. They will learn to recognize that certain colors make them have different feelings. They will begin to understand that colors can be use to create emotions. Students will have the opportunity to create a collage out of warm and cool colors. They will also be able to create a work of art on the Internet.

Title: Ambiguous Pictures/Abstract Art
Description: In this lesson students learn how perspective can change the meaning of art. The students will use a digital camera to take extreme close-ups of objects, thus causing the pictures to become resemble abstract art. This project incorporates art, writing and technology.

Title: Jack's Beans
Description: During this lesson, the classic story of Jack and the Bean Stalk will spark an interest in plants with students. Students will explore the Internet, take a nature walk, and make observations to learn more about plants. A brochure will demonstrate their knowledge of plants.

Title: Better Health in Computer Technology
Description: In this lesson students will learn the rationale for proper hand, eye, and body mechanics when using a computer. Students will discover how to properly use a computer by viewing a presentation, researching the Internet, and by creating their own slideshow presentation.

Title: The Art of Rene Magritte
Description: This unit is about the artist, Rene Magritte. Students engage in hands-on research in various areas of art utilizing images, software, and Internet resources. Students will then create their own image, and work in groups to create a slideshow presentation on Magritte.

Title: Time Flies
Description: This lesson plan is one of the first in a unit on telling time which addresses the following content areas: language arts, math, science, social studies, and technology. Students will read several resource books to gather information. They will then sequence information in a timeline. The final project will be a slideshow presentation.

Title: Sugar Detectives
Description: During this lesson, students will learn to make wise decisions concerning the snacks they eat. Students will learn to read food labels and measure the sugar content in foods. Students will be able to determine if they are practicing healthy eating by creating a food guide pyramid of their eating habits. Students will also create a multimedia presentation to demonstrate what they learned.

Title: Just Plain Living
Description: Students work through a teacher-prepared Webquest in order to learn about the art, food, shelter, clothing, etc. of the Plains Indians. Internet resources are used to collect information in order to make group presentations to the class. Students have the opportunity to decide among several projects to complete in order to demonstrate what they have learned.

Title: Rainforest Music
Description: During this lesson, the world of the rainforest will come alive. Students will have the opportunity to explore the music of the rainforest and create a musical instrument of their own. The Internet will be used as a tool to gather additional information for students to use in a multimedia presentation.

Title: What a Jiffy Lesson
Description: During this lesson on George Washington Carver, students will learn about some of his accomplishments and participate in a hands-on activity of making homemade peanut butter. Students will research information about Carver on the Internet and create a short slide show describing important facts about Carver's life.

Title: Move the Cherokee People
Description: During this lesson, students will explore facts about the Cherokee people, their history, their culture, and their future. This lesson will help students begin to realize how the actions of our predecessors affected people in the past and today. The Internet will be used as a research tool to help students learn more about the Trail of Tears. Students will also have the opportunity to produce a slideshow presentation to share their new knowledge about the Trail of Tears.

Description: Students will work in pairs to research online and/or in print a chosen state and create a travel brochure incorporating the information gathered.

Description: This is a language arts lesson concentrating on point of view and narrative writing. Using the novel Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo, students practice retelling part of a story from another point of view.

Title: How Do Citizens Make Government Work?
Description: This five-session unit will provide hands-on opportunities for students to explore local, state and national governments. In the process, students will use technology and print media to learn about the leaders of each level of government and explore citizenship as a way to make a difference in their communities and nation.

Title: Animal Classification
Description: In this lesson, students will discuss the classification of animals. They will work in groups to research and present classification information about a selected group of animals.

Description: This month-long ongoing lesson will give the students opportunities to learn more about Antarctica. They will investigate and research specific information and use it to create a notebook and an information table.

Title: Looking at Conestoga Wagons
Description: This lesson combines information literacy and technology skills with subject area skills. It is designed to be a collaborative effort between the classroom teacher and the school librarian. The topic of conestoga wagons is reseached from the perspective of a scientist, mathematician, English teacher, artist, geographer, engineer, or historian.

Title: Digital Camera Self-Portraits
Description: Third graders use digital cameras and draw/paint software to create original self-portraits.

Title: Spanish Travel Brochures
Description: Students will incorporate information from Internet research in creating original travel brochures for Spanish speaking countries using word processing or publishing software. Students could alternatively create wikis or podcasts.

Title: Dream Vacation
Description: This unit teaches students to plan a trip with an itinerary, remain within a budget, and work cooperatively. It is a technology-based project that combines a study of mathematics, economics, geography, and social studies.

Title: The Native Americans and Their Environment
Description: The students will research Native American groups and relate how the environment affected their lifestyles and cultures. The students will create a slideshow presentation depicting this relationship. The students will compare Native American groups in order to observe the differences in their lifestyles and cultures.

Title: Capturing A Moment In Time
Description: This lesson allows the students to explore imagery poetry through the use of a digital camera. The students visualize an imagery poem then look at a painting that pays tribute to the poem. Then the students think of a moment in time important to them, take a picture that represents it, and write a poem about it.

Description: This is a fun lesson where the students use thinksheets and digital cameras. The students take an "interesting" picture using the digital camera. After they have printed them they are given at random another student's picture. They write a story about the picture they are given.

Description: This lesson is a technology-based social studies inquiry into patriotic symbols. Students will apply their research skills in an independent investigation of United States patriotic symbols. The students will incorporate their newly acquired knowledge into a digital slideshow presentation to be shared with their peers.

Description: Students will use websites and other resources to find information about the following landforms: mountains, canyons, and valleys.

Working in small groups, they complete a WebQuest, identifying facts and locating different types of information in order to determine the criteria used for selecting these Amazing Americans. In addition, they nominate their own candidates for the title of Amazing American, using additional Web sites to create a profile of their nominee.
