Title: The President's Desk
Description: History comes to life for students as they explore a virtual tour of President John F. Kennedy's Oval Office. This interactive online module features several multi-media presentations of historic aspects of Kennedy's life and administration. Students actively engage in learning about various topics related to Kennedy's presidency, United States history, and what it means to be president of our country. In conclusion, students will use an online digital photo editing tool to create their own Kennedy photo album.

Title: Let Them Eat Cake! - Topography Lesson
Description: Contour lines on topographic maps require visual processing to read and interpret. This hands-on activity helps give a tasty mental image.


Subject: Science (8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Blast Off!!
Description: Working in cooperative learning groups, students research early astronauts, both men and women. They research various rocket and space shuttle designs. With this information, they use Newton's laws to plan, design, and create a paper rocket. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: GPS Scavenger Hunt
Description: This lesson will provide 7th and 8th grade students the opportunity to utilize GPS Handheld Tracking Units in order to understand latitude and longitude. Students will work in groups of four to complete a scavenger hunt around the campus; they will be using the GPS units to guide them to the final destination. Students will answer questions about the points listed on the handout provided by the teacher.

Title: Discover the World of GPS and Geocaching
Description: This lesson will be a creative approach to learning latitude and longitude, and will introduce the students to new technology. Seventh grade students will be given the opportunity to utilize GPS Handheld Tracking Units to understand latitude and longitude. Students will work in groups of four to complete a geocaching activity and a scavenger hunt around campus; they will be using the GPS units to guide them to the final destination. Students will answer questions about points listed on the handout provided by the teacher. We decided to offer this activity as a collaborative effort for one grade level in order to allow all the students the opportunity to participate and work together. This decision allowed us to have four teachers to work together supervising the students. (We also utilized volunteers to assist with supervising each group of students.)

Title: Technology and Baseball
Description: This lesson utilizes a distance learning field trip to The Baseball Hall of Fame to research how technology has affected a baseball player's career.

Title: What Will I Do With My Life?
Description: This lesson gives students a better understanding of careers that fit their personalities. Students take an interest survey, calculate salary, search for possible jobs available in their area, and create a business card.

Title: The Other Side of Sugar
Description: This lesson will identify the various types and quantities of sugars found in foods and how they affect our body. Students will discover the link between these foods and the disease called “diabetes.” The different types of diabetes will be discussed, along with preventative measures and medical requirements. Students will work in groups to research and prepare presentations in the form of slideshows, newsletters, display boards, or written reports for at least three of the content questions. Each group will respond to a different set of content questions in order to address all aspects of the unit. The culminating activity will be for each student to individually interview a person who has diabetes and capture their comments about the disease, how it affects them emotionally and physically, and how it has affected their families.


Subject: Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: From Here to Technology
Description: Students will create a slide on an assigned topic that will become part of a class presentation. The class presentation will trace the evolution of the computer, identify the pioneers of technology, investigate the impact technology has had on the workplace and society, and examine how technology has influenced the course of history in geneeral. This project is a semester long assignment with required progress due each six weeks. Computer lab time will need to be made available either during or after school throughout the semester.
