Title: Masters of Disaster (Middle Grades)
Description: Students will research natural disasters and their impact on people.  They will work in teams to design a disaster preparedness guide to share with the community to reduce the impact of a natural disaster utilizing various creativity apps on the iPad.

Title: Photography: Past to Present  
Description: This lesson is part of a Photography Unit for eighth graders. After learning about the history of photography, the goal is to combine older photography processes with new digital processes. Students will make their own pinhole cameras, take pictures with them and develop their negative images in the darkroom. From there, students will use scanners and computers to invert their negative images into positives and create a digital image, manipulating the new image using image software.

Title: Coming to America!
Description: Delve into living conditions of tenement housing for immigrants in New York in the 19th century with this lesson.  Students research and use primary sources to create a digital PhotoStory of an immigrant family of their choice.

Title: The Bee's Knees of the 1920s
Description: This is a culminating activity to an American history unit on "The Roaring 20s."  Students will work in groups to research notable individuals from the 1920s and apply that knowledge to create a digital poster using Glogster.   This poster will "advertise" these important characters and their impact on American history.


Subject: Arts Education (6 - 12), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: IPA is Cool![ai pi e ɪz kul]
Description: Students will be introduced to the International Phonetic Alphabet and learn how to apply it to songs in foreign languages. In this particular lesson, they will learn the symbols for vowels used in Italian and apply them to a simple, seventeenth-century Italian art song, "Star Vicino". Students will be evaluated through individual podcasts created and edited using Audacity.

Title: Parts of Speech "Blabbers"
Description: Students will create animated images in Blabberize.com to define, explain, and give examples of usage for an assigned part of speech. Teacher will then compile saved video clips into a photostory presentation explaining all eight parts of speech and present final copy for class presentation.


Subject: Technology Education (3 - 8)
Title: "My Three Words" vodcast compilation or series
Description: Students create vodcasts that use the format of the Good Morning America feature "My Three Words".  This works well as a culminating activity for a unit or a technology-based project.  In groups, students  select a three word phrase to communicate a specific topic/idea, then create a storyboard and choose appropriate multimedia elements to best express their chosen phrase.  They use a variety of software applications to find or create images and produce a video file.

Title: Party Time! Excellent!: Planning a Kid's Birthday Party
Description: In this five-day lesson, students will plan a birthday party for a child (age 5-10 years of age). Each group (based on kitchen groups) will create an on-line invitation, decorate the room, and bake and decorate a cake for the party. At the end of the week, your principal will be begging for an invitation to the best party in town!

Title: It IS Easy Being "Green": Part II of III Creating Your Own Cleaning Supplies
Description: In this second part of a three-part lesson, students will collaborate in ability groups to complete a Jigsaw activity on all-purpose cleaners. Next, students will research, create, and evaluate homemade cleaning supplies and determine the effectiveness compared to conventional (store-bought) cleaners. Students will present their findings for both the jigsaw and their product in a flipchart on the Interactive WhiteBoard.


Subject: Character Education (K - 12), or Education and Training (7 - 8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: It IS Easy Being "Green"- Part I of III
Description: In this two-day lesson, students will learn what "Going Green" means, including how to utilize sustainable resources. Students will work in groups (selected at random) and research pros and cons of changing their lifestyle. This is the first lesson of a three-part unit.

Title: Becoming a Creative Director: A Day in The Life of Jenna Lyons
Description: How would you like a $1 million bonus because a celebrity (or the President's wife!) began wearing the clothing that you have marketed? Although a limited number of positions are available, there are great opportunities available if you have what it takes! In this module, you will learn the qualifications, training, education, salary, and job requirements necessary for a position as a creative director. In the end, you will create a blog or website focusing on the top picks for young children this year.

Title: If Earth No Longer Existed. . .
Description: Students will work in cooperative groups to research characteristics of each of the planets in our solar system. Students will design a travel brochure outlining the characteristics of each planet. Each group will make an oral presentation on their brochure.


Subject: Mathematics (6 - 7), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: What I DIDN'T know...
Description: This unit is designed to assist students in identifying areas of mathematical weakness then requires them to create a wiki page teaching that topic. Activities include evaluating Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-10) scores to determine weak areas, collecting and organizing data, and creating a multimedia project to assist in teaching the topic. Multimedia can be, but is not limited to, movies, slide shows, interactive games, or podcasts. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.


Subject: Technology Education (6 - 12)
Title: Spreadsheets -- A New Study Tool
Description: Students will learn to use spreadsheets to enter if-then statements that can then be used for study guides for any subject area. Students will create a generic spreadsheet that gives feedback when they enter a correct response to a particular question. They must understand the questions they are entering in order to enter the correct formula to get the desired feedback.


Subject: Technology Education (K - 12)
Title: Ramp for Handicap Accessibility - Part 2
Description: Working in groups of 4-5 students will use the information, pictures, diagrams, and narratives created in Part 1 to develop a brochure. The brochure will consist of guidelines for handicap accessible ramps, sample calculations and contact information. It must be suitable for distribution at city hall.


Subject: English Language Arts (7), or Social Studies (7), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: World Traveler
Description: Seventh grade social studies students will create a passport and detailed daily travel journal. The project will incorporate a minimum of two types of technology as they create a narrative vividly describing a city/country. Specific details of the geography, people, their culture, government and particular points of interest will be included. Pictures will be downloaded and used to illustrate the location and or adventure.


Subject: Social Studies (7), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Congress: Requirements for Office, Members Currently Serving in the United States Congress, and Characteristics and Experiences Needed for Election to Public Office
Description: The students will research and present a computer slide-show on the requirements of office of the Senate and the House of Representatives and a special focus on the two Senators and a House member from one selected state. The students will create an election brochure in which they themselves will run for one of the above offices.


Subject: Character Education (K - 12), or English Language Arts (6), or Social Studies (6), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: What Makes a Good or Bad Leader?
Description: After deciding on the criteria of a good leader, students research either a good or bad leader, create a class presentation of that person which focuses on his/her impact on history. Students then write and perform a three to four minute skit to illustrate the leader's impact on American life.


Subject: English Language Arts (7 - 8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Expressing Yourself With Poetry
Description: Two classes at different schools or across the hall share dramatic poetry presentations as part of a poetry unit. Students listen to poetry, practice reading poetry, and (if practical) participate in a distance learning program on poetry. Students then produce a Poetry Alive program that will be shared with another class through video conferencing or video tapes.


Subject: Information Literacy (K - 12), or Science (6), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Comparing Two Fossil Localities
Description: During this lesson students go on a field trip to locate fossils. Students investigate their findings and identify them using resources from the Internet. They then videoconference to compare/contrast their hypotheses with those of another school.


Subject: English Language Arts (6 - 8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Reading, Writing, and Sounder
Description: The activities included in this lesson plan require the reading of William Armstrong's Sounder. This technology-based lesson fosters critical thinking and includes journal writing, student-led discussions with another class via video conferencing, vocabulary development, and persuasive writing.

Title: Everyday Heroes
Description: Following a unit on Greek mythology and mythological heroes, students design and maintain a website that features everyday heroes. Students submit candidates based on their everyday encounters with people in the community.

Title: Understanding Comics
Description: Using the book Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud as the primary resource, this unit focuses on comics as a tool for communication. Students participate in activities which include journal and essay writing, a graphic organizer, and a distance learning field trip.

Title: Comets
Description: During this lesson, students have the opportunity to explore comets. By navigating the Internet, viewing a slideshow, and participating in a videoconference with NASA, students will discover what comets are all about.


Subject: Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Let's Make A Change
Description: A business marketing class and a family and consumer science class collaborate to redecorate the Oval Office for a newly-elected President from Alabama. One class researches the history of the Oval Office and the other supplies the measurements, colors, and furniture choices for the redecoration. A budget is prepared, a spreadsheet utilized, design boards made, and presentation projects created. (The lesson can be adapted for one class.)


Subject: English Language Arts (8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Hold Fast To Your Dreams: The Sound and Sense of Langston Hughes
Description: Students investigate poetry form as they research the life of Langston Hughes. They perform the lyrics of his poetry, participate in a distance learning program from Cleveland Institute of Music, and produce computer-generated brochures and booklets as they execute this lesson plan.

Title: This Business Called Learning: Advertising
Description: After analyzing the techniques of propaganda in commercial advertising, students work in cooperative "business" groups to create an advertising campaign for a new product called Giggle Gum. Campaigns include a press release, slideshow presentation, print ad, and radio commercial.

Title: Presenting the Eight Parts of Speech
Description: This end-of-unit lesson involves group slideshow presentations on the definitions and functions of the eight parts of speech.


Subject: Social Studies (8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Confucius Changes China By: Gina Merritt & Kimberly Phillips
Description: In this lesson students analyze Confucianism and its effect on conflicts in China. Students will evaluate an excerpt from The Analects of Confucius to realize the usefulness of Confucius' teachings and create an original cartoon using Confucius' teachings to illustrate conflict resolution that occurs in modern times.


Subject: Information Literacy (K - 12), or Technology Education (6 - 12)
Title: Understanding and Using Boolean Operators
Description: After an introduction to the Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT, parenthesis and NEAR, students practice searches using a worksheet.


Subject: Languages Other Than English (Foreign Languages) (3 - 12), or Technology Education (3 - 12)
Title: Spanish Travel Brochures
Description: Students will incorporate information from Internet research in creating original travel brochures for Spanish speaking countries using word processing or publishing software. Students could alternatively create wikis or podcasts.


Subject: Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: From Here to Technology
Description: Students will create a slide on an assigned topic that will become part of a class presentation. The class presentation will trace the evolution of the computer, identify the pioneers of technology, investigate the impact technology has had on the workplace and society, and examine how technology has influenced the course of history in geneeral. This project is a semester long assignment with required progress due each six weeks. Computer lab time will need to be made available either during or after school throughout the semester.


Subject: Character Education (K - 12), or English Language Arts (8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: The Diary of Anne Frank: How Would I Survive?
Description: After reading the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Diary of Anne Frank, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, student groups examine the coping strategies of the people in the Secret Annex. Then, each student develops a personal survival plan to be included in a group slideshow presentation which addresses this question: How would I survive if I experienced the same stressful situation? Additionally, the students discuss current world situations that necessitate coping strategies.


Subject: English Language Arts (7), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: All About Us: Writing and Presenting Poetry
Description: In this lesson students write a poem about their class and classmates. Students then transfer their poems to individual presentation slides which are combined with their classmates' slides to create a class slideshow presentation. This presentation can be printed to create a class ABC book.


Subject: Technology Education (6 - 12)
Title: Spreadsheets 101
Description: This lesson introduces students to the function and use of spreadsheets. It includes a Power Point presentation (to be used by the teacher) as well as beginning student assignments.


Subject: English Language Arts (7 - 8), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Interactive Reading Project
Description: Students are motivated to read and learn to discuss literature by discussing books they are reading via e-mail.
