Description: Students will work in groups to measure the perimeter of items around the school. They will record their data on a spreadsheet in the form of a line plot.
Subject: Mathematics (3  4), or Credit Recovery Science (3  5) Title: Sailing on the Wind
Description: This is a handson lesson that uses science and the steps of the Engineering Design Process to determine important properties in sail design materials and learn how to harness wind power. Students will learn that a problem can be solved in different ways using different materials, properties of materials change its effectiveness, conducting tests help determine versatility of materials, and that wind can be harnessed to do work.

Subject: Mathematics (3) Title: It's In The Bag
Description: This lesson is a unique and fun way to review perimeter, angles, and types of adjectives. Students pick an object from the classroom that will fit in a paper lunch bag. They investigate their object and fill in the attached sheet. You can then make a bulletin board out in the hall by attaching the bag (with the object in it) below or beside the info sheet. Students can come by and try to guess what object is in the bag by looking at the info sheet. They can then check their guess by looking in the bag.

Description: This lesson will introduce students to measuring weight, mass, volume, and capacity using metric and cutomary units.

Students will create a chart to record their information, use their chart to graph their data, and find measures of central tendency of their data. Description: This is a lesson where collaborative learning groups are used to explore perimeter and area of an irregular figure using pattern blocks. Description: During this lesson, students will learn how to create a pictograph by collecting data and using pictures to represent the data. Students will have practice reading pictographs and will learn to create a pictograph using spreadsheet or software.

Description: During this handson lesson, students use reasoning skills in making predictions and then applying skills to obtain accurate measurements. They navigate websites to practice their measuring skills. Students also get a brief overview of the history of measurement.
Subject: Mathematics (3), or Credit Recovery Science (5), or Technology Education (3  5) Title: How Old Is That Tree?
Description: One of the best ways to learn about a tree is to look at its annual rings. Tree rings show patterns of change in the tree's life as well as changes in the area where it grows. In this lesson, students will trace environmental changes using a cross section of a tree trunk.

Description: During this lesson, students will learn that water is constantly being recycled through the atmosphere and how this affects us. Students will explore the water cycle on the Internet. Students create different types of weather situations to see how the water cycle works. Mathematics skills will be used to determine results from the observations.
