Title: Sky High
Description: Students will work together, implementing problem-solving strategies to complete a building challenge. The group will be given a budget and materials to construct a structurally sound skyscraper. The students will purchase materials, build, and measure their structure.

Title: Sailing on the Wind
Description: This is a hands-on lesson that uses science and the steps of the Engineering Design Process to determine important properties in sail design materials and learn how to harness wind power. Students will learn that a problem can be solved in different ways using different materials, properties of materials change its effectiveness, conducting tests help determine versatility of materials, and that wind can be harnessed to do work. This lesson is adapted from Catching the Wind: Designing Windmills, Lesson 3: Testing Sail Designs (produced by the Museum of Boston for the Engaging Youth in Engineering program.) Title: The Class Quilt
Description: Students will design a 12 inch quilt square consisting of geometrical shapes.They must use their knowledge of fractions and polygons in order to create an exact 12" by 12" square.Students will use knowledge of area of a figure in order to create a quilt using their squares.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Effects of Friction on a Moving Block
Description: Students will move a 2 X 4 inch block with a hook attached across different surface areas. Students will discover how the friction created by these surface areas affect the movement of the block. Students will begin the activity by predicting which surface will produce the most and least friction. Five different surfaces will be tested (smooth table or desk top, wax paper, paper towel, course sandpaper and fine sandpaper).This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Inner and Outer Planets
Description: As part of the space unit, students will learn about the physical and chemical components of the planets. The students will compare the planets in list form. Title: Friction Faction
Description: The students will use different surfaces to test which will cause less friction on a ball. This will let the students determine how friction affects the distance an object in motion will go. This lesson will include cooperative grouping for the activity and whole group discussion of the results.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: How Do You Measure Up?
Description: During this hands-on lesson, students use reasoning skills in making predictions and then applying skills to obtain accurate measurements. They navigate websites to practice their measuring skills. Students also get a brief overview of the history of measurement.

Title: Students Standing Tall
Description: During this lesson, students use data they collect from a class activity to find the mean, mode, median, and range. Students utilize the Internet as a source of information by viewing websites to learn how to find the mean, median, mode, and range of data.

Title: Comparing Modes of Transportation
Description: In this lesson students will visit different websites in order to decide the best mode of transportation from their home town to New York City. Students will graph the results and write a persuasive paper.

Title: The Water Cycle
Description: During this lesson, students will learn that water is constantly being recycled through the atmosphere and how this affects us. Students will explore the water cycle on the Internet. Students create different types of weather situations to see how the water cycle works. Mathematics skills will be used to determine results from the observations.

Title: Explosive Fun with Volcanoes
Description: In this lesson the students will work in groups to make their own volcanoes and learn the different aspects of a volcano.

They consider aspects of data collection such as how to obtain measurements and record the data they collect. In collecting data, students measure with standard units and carry out simple unit conversions.
