Title: Decimal Dilemma:  Carlos the Centipede needs to buy tennis shoes!
Description: In this lesson, Carlos the Centipede must buy new baseball shoes.  His dilemma will be how to multiply decimals (money) by multiples of 10.  To add to the dilemma, Carlos' baseball team needs to buy shoes too!  Students will multiply decimals by 100.  Students will investigate what is happening to the decimal point each time a decimal is multiplied by a multiple of 10.

Subject: Mathematics (5 - 6)
Title: Decimal Dilemmas:  Carlos the Centipede is Adding Decimals!
Description: In this lesson, students will work in collaborative/cooperative groups to understand adding decimals.  Students will use decimal grids to represent the sum of decimals. Emphasis is on using place-value, lining up the decimals and bringing the decimal down.  Students will understand how important estimation of decimals is in real-life situations.

Subject: Mathematics (5 - 6)
Title: Decimal Dilemma:  Carlos the Centipede is Subtracting Decimals!
Description: In this lesson, students will work in collaborative/cooperative groups to understand subtracting decimals.  Students will use decimal grids to represent the difference of decimals.  Emphasis is on using place-value, lining up the decimals and bringing the decimal down.  Students will understand how important estimation of decimals is in real-life situations

Subject: Information Literacy (K - 12), or Mathematics (5 - 6)
Title: Dewey Decimal Goes to Math Class
Description: Math students take an onsite field trip to the library (media center) to meet the Dewey decimal system.   An "Essential Question" will be used to a set the purpose for understanding why we use the dewey decimal system. Students will compare and order decimals based on the dewey decimal system.

Subject: Character Education (K - 12), or Mathematics (4 - 5)
Title: Lining up the Decimals
Description: This lesson provides a chance for the students to order decimals from least to greatest and greatest to least. The numbers are based on student's ability. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Post-Office Numbers      Add Bookmark
Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students participate in activities in which they focus on the role of numbers and language in real-world situations. Students discuss a picture of things you might see at a post office and then discuss, describe, read, and write about whole numbers to thousands, decimal fractions to hundredths, and common fractions.

Title: Communicating about Mathematics Using Games: Playing Fraction Tracks      Add Bookmark
Description: Mathematical games can foster mathematical communication as students explain and justify their moves to one another. In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This e-example from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 3-5 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. e-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.
