Title: $100 Picture
Description: This is a lesson where collaborative learning groups are used to explore  perimeter and area of an irregular figure using pattern blocks. This lesson should be used after students have already had some experience with finding the perimeter and area of a figure.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.


Subject: Mathematics (3 - 5)
Title: The Class Quilt
Description: Students will design a 12 inch quilt square consisting of geometrical shapes.They must use their knowledge of fractions and polygons in order to create an exact 12" by 12" square.Students will use knowledge of area of a figure in order to create a quilt using their squares.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Questioning NASA
Description: In this lesson students will work collaboratively to explore the "Big Question" that led up to this lesson was "Why are there two solid rocket boosters used to launch the space shuttle instead of one with the same amount of fuel?" This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Get it Straight Mr. Decimal!
Description: Students will review addition and subtraction of decimals with a hands-on, cooperative small group experience. They will be placed in small groups and solve problems on individual white boards. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!
Description: This lesson provides students practical situations using money. It also allows them to practice the skills of adding and subtracting decimals.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Description: This lesson is used to show students how a bank pays interest to people who deposit money into it and charges interest to people who borrow money from it.

Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students investigate data in connection with recyclable materials and develop plans to help the environment. Students gather and graph information about their classroom paper use over a period of several days and then interpret graphical information and use the data as a basis for future planning.

Title: Communicating about Mathematics Using Games: Playing Fraction Tracks      Add Bookmark
Description: Mathematical games can foster mathematical communication as students explain and justify their moves to one another. In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This e-example from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 3-5 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. e-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.
