Title: Popping HOT
Description: In this lesson students will discover the different forms of heat transfer such as conduction, convection, and radiation and that these forms can be demonstrated by popping popcorn.  Students will learn the health benefits of popcorn, one of America’s favorite snacks.  Students will also use fun facts about popcorn to solve math problems.  This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Inner and Outer Planets of the Solar System
Description: In this science lesson students will work collaboratively to learn and introduce the eight planets, sizes, characteristics, and their order.  They will use size comparisons, research a planet, design a poster and create a PowerPoint presentation.

Title: The Average Middle "Schooler"
Description: In this lesson, students will work in groups to find the average middle school student.  They will measure members of the group, find the average, and convert to different units of measure.  Students will also conduct a survey and display the information in graphs.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Integers Are Rising and Falling Everywhere! Adding and Subtracting Integers
Description: Students will expand from the idea of not only identifying signed numbers but to use them for numerical operations.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Students Standing Tall
Description: During this lesson, students use data they collect from a class activity to find the mean, mode, median, and range. Students utilize the Internet as a source of information by viewing websites to learn how to find the mean, median, mode, and range of data.

Title: The Water Cycle
Description: During this lesson, students will learn that water is constantly being recycled through the atmosphere and how this affects us. Students will explore the water cycle on the Internet. Students create different types of weather situations to see how the water cycle works. Mathematics skills will be used to determine results from the observations.

In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This e-example from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 3-5 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. e-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.
