Title: Becoming a Wise Consumer: Comparison Shopping
Description: In this introductory lesson to money management for teens, students will use everyday math skills to comparison shop a variety of products. Students will learn several ways to save money, including using store discounts, coupons, and unit pricing to determine the better deal. This is Part I of a series on becoming a wise consumer.

Title: Credit Cards Are "Interest"ing
Description: Students will create a credit card, focusing on appealing terms and slogan.  They will use their credit card to go on a shopping spree.  The students will receive a "BILL" to discover/discuss the effects/application of simple interest.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Percents
Description: This lesson explores the making of comparisons by using percents. In this lesson you will compare your class's favorite foods using percents. Students will use cooperative groups to answer follow up questions about the lesson.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: New York with $1200
Description: CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are Demopolis Middle School’s first –place winner of the annual MATHATHON!!!!!!!!!! You and three of your classmates have been awarded an exciting trip to NEW YORK CITY! You will each be given $1200 to cover all your expenses during your three day stay. You must use only your $1200 prize to cover all expenses (transportation costs, hotel accommodations, food, gratuities (tips), souvenirs, and entertainment). Please budget your money carefully – decide which purchases are most important and budget these first. Don’t forget to have fun!!

Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students attempt to identify the concept of a million by working with smaller numerical units, such as blocks of 10 or 100, and then expanding the idea by multiplication or repeated addition until a million is reached. Additionally, they use critical thinking to analyze situations and to identify mathematical patterns that enable them to develop the concept of very large numbers.

An emphasis on using components of language helps students build a broader vocabulary of numbers than the traditional symbolic representation of numbers.
