Title: "Factoring by Mack"
Description: This strategy for factoring trinomials will eliminate the trial-and-error method used in most textbooks.The lesson will be a direct teaching lesson. With the teacher lecturing and the students taking notes and then having the students break up into groups to solve sample problems.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.
Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12)
Title: Factoring Fanatic
Description: This activity is designed to give students practice in "finding" the correct factors to use when attempting to factor a trinomial. The students are provided with a Tic-Tac sheet to help them discover the relationship or pattern between two numbers. Students then use their discovery to fill in a second Tic Tac sheet. At this point students have uncovered the mystery of how to locate the appropriate factors in a given trinomial. They can now factor any trinomial placed in front of them!

Description: In this lesson, from Illuminations, students explore arithmetic statements leading to a result that is the factoring pattern for the difference of two squares. Students analyze and represent patterns with symbolic rules, compare quantities with integers, and learn to communicate mathematical thinking to peers and teachers.
