ALEX Lesson Plans
Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12) Title: Discover the Roots of a Polynomial Function
Description: In this lesson, students will be re-introduced to the Four Step Problem - Solving Plan. The plan will be used as a 'checks and balance' tool for discovering the roots (solutions) of polynomial functions. Students will:
*Explore the problem - identify what is given and what they are asked to find.
*Develop a plan - look for a pattern, make a model, solve a simpler but related problem.
*Solve the problem - carry out the plan
*Examine the solution - check the results with the conditions in the problem, check the reasonableness of the solution
Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12) Title: "Factoring by Mack"
Description: This strategy for factoring trinomials will eliminate the trial-and-error method used in most textbooks. The lesson will be a direct teaching lesson. With the teacher lecturing and the students taking notes and then having the students break up into groups to solve sample problems. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12) Title: Exponential Growth and Decay
Description: This lesson on exponential growth and decay involves a variety of teaching resources. There are a variety of websites used to teach and reinforce how to identify exponential growth or decay and how to solve problems relating to growth and decay. There is a lab provided that will help model these concepts being taught and computer based practice on these concepts. Videos are provided that give a picture image of how exponential growth and decay works. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12) Title: You Mean ANYTHING To The Zero Power Is One?
Description: This lesson is a technology-based project to reinforce concepts related to the Exponential Function. It can be used in conjunction with any textbook practice set. Construction of computer models of several Exponential Functions will promote meaningful learning rather than memorization.
Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12) Title: Factoring Fanatic
Description: This activity is designed to give students practice in "finding" the correct factors to use when attempting to factor a trinomial. The students are provided with a Tic-Tac sheet to help them discover the relationship or pattern between two numbers. Students then use their discovery to fill in a second Tic Tac sheet. At this point students have uncovered the mystery of how to locate the appropriate factors in a given trinomial. They can now factor any trinomial placed in front of them!
Thinkfinity Lesson Plans
Subject: Mathematics Title: Predicting Your Financial Future
