ALEX Lesson Plans
Subject: Mathematics (8 12) Title: Geometric Quilts
Description: Students will use a square to investigate other polygonal shapes that can be formed. Students will work with these polygons to make designs that will later constitute cooperatively designed quilts. The quilts will be made by translating, rotating, or reflecting a thirtysix patch design. The completed quilts will then be used for a discussion of area and perimeter. Students will blog about what they have learned while doing the lesson and will include pictures of their finished product in our class blog.
Subject: Mathematics (9 12) Title: Pennies, Pennies and More Pennies
Description: Students will work in cooperative groups to determine the number of pennies to line the baseboard, cover the floor and fill the room. Students will determine the geometric probability that the head of pin will land on the penny and not the floor space between pennies. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.
Subject: Mathematics (8 12) Title: Quadrilaterals
Description: This is an inquiry lesson used to review Algebra 1 objectives by applying them to geometry concepts. Students explore the properties of quadrilaterals and classify them by definition. This lesson can be use in geometry classes. Students in geometry classes can apply theorems and definitions of quadrilaterals rather than as an inquiry lesson. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.
Subject: Mathematics (9 12) Title: Area and Perimeter of Various Polygons
Description: In this lesson students will be engaged in an interactive online practice session using area and perimeter. Students will have to use critical thinking skills in order to unlock gates and learn more about the cups in the challenge.
Subject: Mathematics (7 12), or Technology Education (9 12) Title: Let’s Tessellate
Description: This lesson is a handson, technologybased project that will take place in the classroom and computer lab. Students will discover which regular polygons tessellate the plane by constructing polygonal tessellations. Students will also use a spreadsheet to calculate the area and perimeter of the polygons.

Subject: Mathematics Title: Playing with Squares
Add Bookmark
Description: This reproducible activity sheet, from an Illuminations lesson, prompts students to investigate the meaning of square roots by considering the area of squares and the heights of various stacks of squares. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12
Subject: Mathematics Title: Location, Location, Location
Add Bookmark
Description: In this Illuminations lesson, students use a dynamic geometry applet to investigate the relationship between the distances from a point inside a regular polygon to each side. In addition, there are links to online activity sheets and other related resources. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12
Subject: Mathematics Title: Octagon Island
Add Bookmark
Description: This student interactive, from an Illuminations lesson, allows students to explore the distances from an interior point of a octagon to its sides and determine the sum of these distances. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12
Subject: Mathematics Title: Pinwheel
Add Bookmark
Description: In this Illuminations lesson, students create parallelograms from square sheets of paper and connect them to form an octagon. During the construction, students consider angle measures, segment lengths, and areas in terms of the original square. At the end of the lesson, the octagon is transformed into a pinwheel, and students discover a surprising result. There is also a link to a related activity sheet. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 6,7,8,9,10,11,12
