ALEX Lesson Plans
Subject: English Language Arts (9), or English Language Arts (9), or Mathematics (9 - 12) Title: Fibonacci Poetry
Description: Students will review the Fibonacci sequence and compose poems with the number of syllables in each line corresponding to the the numbers of that sequence. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Subject: Arts Education (7 - 12), or Mathematics (9 - 12) Title: Symmetry: Theory, Reality and Art!
Description: Students will explore symmetry as defined in geometry, as seen in their community and through the art of Escher-Escher Art Website. Technology and art are incorporated in this lesson. The incorporation of art is an important element in developing the ‘whole child’ if a school system has been forced to eliminate a formal arts program. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Mathematics (9 - 12), or Science (9 - 12) Title: Discovering Earth's History
Description: This lesson introduces the basic principles that are used to interpret geologic time. It associates the relationships between the rock record and historical events that created the landforms on our planet. It explains how the rock record can be interpreted by geologists. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Mathematics (7 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12) Title: Let’s Tessellate
Description: This lesson is a hands-on, technology-based project that will take place in the classroom and computer lab. Students will discover which regular polygons tessellate the plane by constructing polygonal tessellations. Students will also use a spreadsheet to calculate the area and perimeter of the polygons.
Subject: Mathematics (6 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12) Title: Golden Ratios of the Body, Architecture, and Nature
Description: Students will study the golden ratio as it relates to human body measurements, architecture, and nature. Students will use a desktop publishing program to create a poster. The poster will have digital photos of themselves, architecture samples, or nature examples. Students will also include a spreadsheet with the lengths, widths, and length/width ratios of the samples included in the photos.
Thinkfinity Lesson Plans
Subject: Mathematics Title: Soda Cans
Add Bookmark
Description: This reproducible activity sheet, from an Illuminations lesson, guides students through a simulation in which they try different arrangements to make the most efficient use of space and thus pack the most soda cans into a rectangular packing box. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12

Subject: Mathematics Title: Transformations and Frieze Patterns
Add Bookmark
Description: In two lessons, this unit will introduce students to the world of symmetry and rotation in figures and patterns. Students learn to recognize and classify symmetry in decorative figures and frieze patterns, and will also get the chance to create and classify their own figures and patterns using JavaSketchpad applets. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12

Subject: Mathematics Title: Mirror Tool
Add Bookmark
Description: This student interactive, from Illuminations, can be used to investigate symmetry. Students can view the results when they flip, rotate, or reflect a figure across a line. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12

Subject: Arts, Mathematics, Science Title: Art Algorithms
Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from Science NetLinks, you'll hear about new methods of art conservation. Art conservation is traditionally a painstaking and time-consuming business. But the process of fixing up a damaged da Vinci or a scarred Seurat may become a lot easier, thanks to the work of mathematicians. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources. Thinkfinity Partner: Science NetLinks Grade Span: 6,7,8,9,10,11,12

Subject: Arts,Mathematics Title: Classifying Transformations
Add Bookmark
Description: Students will identify and classify reflections and symmetries in figures and patterns. They will also have the opportunity to create frieze patterns from each of the seven classes using the supplemental on-line activities. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 9,10,11,12

Subject: Mathematics Title: Golden Ratio
Add Bookmark
Description: In this Illuminations lesson, students explore the Fibonacci sequence. They examine how the ratio of two consecutive Fibonacci numbers creates the Golden Ratio and identify real-life examples of the Golden Ratio. Thinkfinity Partner: Illuminations Grade Span: 6,7,8
