ALEX Lesson Plans


Subject: English Language Arts (K - 2), or Science (3 - 12)
Title: A Journey Through the Trees
Description: The teacher will discuss the importance of trees with the students. The teacher will provide photographs of various trees that grow in Russell Cave National Monument and the surrounding North Alabama area. The teacher will discuss significant features of each tree and pertinent ways to identify them. The collection may include: Dogwood, various Oak, Hickory, Pine, Maple, Cedar, Beech, Elm, and Birch trees. The teacher will take a nature walk with the students in order for each child to choose a tree and do a bark rub. The students will compare their art and write a journal entry in order to describe something they learned about their particular tree. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.

Title: A Penny For Your Thoughts
Description: This is an outline for a week-long lesson usually taught in the month of February around President's Day. It is an interdisciplinary study combining coin identification with a literature-based study of the Presidents represented on the coins.

Title: Celebrating The Chinese New Year
Description: During this lesson, students will learn about the Chinese New Year celebration, including customs, symbols and their meanings, and roles of adults and children. Following the lesson, students will compare the celebrations in United States and China. The students will also draw a picture and write a sentence about their favorite holiday celebration.

Title: Cooking Experience with Blueberries For Sal
Description: This lesson will enhance the study of the color blue by providing a story, cooking experience and writing activity.

Title: Art Fun With the Fairy Tale, The Fisherman and His Wife
Description: This lesson will give students the opportunity to view a variety of illustrations in different forms of literature. Students will be able to create their own work of art. They will also find that fairy tales can inspire readers to create original works of art.


Subject: English Language Arts (K), or Mathematics (K)
Title: There's Magic In Green Eggs and Ham
Description: As a part of a unit about Dr. Suess, students will learn about sequential order. Student understanding will be aided by the use of hands-on preparation of green eggs and ham, dictation, flannel board, sentence strips, and a living center.


Subject: English Language Arts (K), or Science (K)
Title: Pumpkins
Description: During this lesson students will be involved in hands-on discovery activities using pumpkins and pumpkin seeds. They will compare the size and weight of their pumpkins. They will also have an opportunity to taste pumpkin seeds. Students will also learn how to create a simple illustration using a graphics software program on the computer or the Internet.

Title: From an Ugly Caterpillar to a Beautiful Butterfly!
Description: This is a kindergarten reading lesson using a character analysis Think-sheet. Kindergartners will discuss characters, plot, and setting of a story.

Title: Tell a Migration Story...With Interviews      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Xpeditions student activity, students become reporters for the local newspaper and conduct interviews with someone who has migrated to their community. After they finish their interviews, students share what they have learned about their interviewees experiences, memories, and feelings about coming to live in their new community.
