Title: Analyzing Text:  What is the Author really saying? We Better Take This Thing Apart!
Description: Critical thinking skills such as analyzing text requires a true understanding of the text. Analyzing requires the students to break the text apart and looking carefully "closely" at the different components and making sense of the text. Students must be lead to break the text into it's components and then reorganize the text.  Teachers can teach analyzing skills by modeling their thinking through questioning the text and making students aware of the authors purpose. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Showing the Difference Between Erosion and Weathering
Description: In the lesson the students will be learning about weathering and erosion. They will see examples of weathering and erosion and the difference between the two. They will be performing experiments that show weathering and erosion. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Tornadoes
Description: Students answer KWL questions on tornadoes before watching two short videos of a tornado, its formation, and its damage. Using a tornado simulation experiment, students discuss tornado facts. Students read and evaluate a list of safety rules and procedures to produce a poster of the effects of a tornado. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Bird Migration
Description: This lesson teaches bird migration by using the award winning Caldecott Medal honor book: Make Way for Ducklings. It accesses a website to give a history of the book and the plot. It promotes student interaction through discussion, internet information and activities to include computer games, videos, and color sheets.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Reptile Adventure
Description: During this lesson, students work with small groups and partners on reptile research. They will have the opportunity to use books and the Internet for research. They will also go on a reptile adventure searching for new information about reptiles.

Title: A Readers' Theatre for Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain
Description: This readers' theatre of Verna Aardema's Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain crosses the curriculum to incorporate language arts, social studies, and science objectives. Students will become familiar with the text of the story and then present the story as a play with parts.

Title: Wonderful Wolves
Description: In this lesson students learn about wolves through literature and research. Students learn the truth about wolves by completing a WebQuest examining wolf myths. Then students have the opportunity to locate information about wolves through a variety of print resources and the Internet.

Title: Once Upon A Time: Using a Fairy Tale to Teach the Elements of a Story
Description: Students will hear and read different versions of a familiar fairy tale and identify what elements a story must have (character, plot, setting) for the story to be interesting and make sense. Using a Venn diagram, students will then compare the differences and similarities between various versions of the story. Next, students in small groups will create their own versions of the story. Finally, students will also participate in a videoconference, "Fractured Fairy Tales", from the Museum of Television and Radio.

Title: Little Bear's Adventure
Description: During this lesson, students will read about Little Bear's adventure in the book Little Bear by Elsie Minarik. Students will learn about the elements of a story and then explore Little Bear through a WebQuest on the Internet. Students will also navigate a website to complete several tasks to learn more about Little Bear.

Title: Habitats
Description: What is a habitat? In this lesson, students will identify that a habitat has four elements, food, water, shelter, and space. Students will identify their own habitat and create a brochure describing the habitat in terms of food, water, shelter, and space. They will work in cooperative groups to create a multimedia presentation describing the food, water, shelter, and space needs of one animal.

Title: Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens
Description: Students will read and discuss Janet Stevens' book, Tops & Bottoms, and use it as a stepping stone to understanding character analysis, sequence of events, and main ideas and supporting details.

Title: Glorious Sunflowers
Description: In this lesson students will identify, measure and graph seeds and other characteristics of sunflowers and write descriptive and narrative paragraphs about sunflowers.

Title: Very Busy Spiders
Description: The students will work from a computer and a specified Webquest to complete a unit on spiders. The lessons will incorporate literature, writing, science, art, and graphing.

Description: This lesson, from EDSITEment, aims to help students understand history and recognize that the past is different depending on who is remembering and retelling it. There are four activities, in which students construct a timeline based on events from their own lives and family histories, construct a class timeline through comparison with each other's histories, research oral history by interviewing family members, and study primary sources to write their own history of the Great Chicago Fire.
