Title: Informational Text- The Water Cycle
Description: This is an ELA- 2nd Grade lesson on informational text which integrates science and technology. Students will discuss in whole group informational text and its importance. They will use the Close Reading strategy to read informational text on the water cycle. Students will complete a KWL chart throughout the unit. They will discuss their findings in partners and work together to complete a water cycle graphic organizer. They will use the iPad to create a blog post and create an animated movie discussing the water cycle. This is a week long unit. 


Subject: English Language Arts (2)
Title: Now I Know!  A fact-filled presentation.
Description: After teacher instruction the students will work with a partner to identify and use text features (captions, bold print, subheadings, table of contents, etc.) to gather information on a topic.  Students will record their information on an information sheet that they will then use to prepare a video presentation using the Educreations app on the iPad.  The teacher will assist students in presenting their reports at the interactive board.

Title: Those Sneaky Poets!!  
Description: This lesson integrates the area of science and english language arts. Students will analyze figurative language in the poem A Drop Around the World by Barbara Shaw McKinney and work collaboratively to create a poster of the water cycle that demonstrates their knowledge of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation in the water cycle. Students will then individually produce a paragraph that demonstrates their knowledge of the water cycle using the key words evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Title: It's Not Hard to Make a Card!
Description: This lesson on poetry and rhyming integrates technology and student creativity.  The students will use what they have learned about poetry to create their own piece of work through a project.  This lesson can be facilitated in flip classroom style, in class flip classroom, style, and classical lecture style.  In this lesson plan I am choosing to facilitate it using in class flip classroom style through stations.  Students will be able to view a presentation that I have created on poetry using the Educreations application, create a card including a poem written by them using Greeting Card Maker, an application available on Android devices, and then send the card to a parent or friend of their choice.

Title: Fantastic Fairy-tale Characters
Description: Students will work in groups to describe character's actions and points of view in specific fairy tales. Students will continue working in groups to fill out an open-mind portrait on two different characters in the story.  The students will come together in a whole group setting and discuss their characters from the story.  The students will then develop their own characters in a fairy tale and produce their story on an iPad.  This lesson should take place over a 2-3 day period.

Title: The Apple Pie Tree
Description: Who doesn't love an apple pie? In this story, students will observe an apple tree throughout the seasons while answering who, what, where, why, when, and how questions. As a conclusion, students will make and eat an apple pie! This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Exploring Customs and Cultures- Part 1
Description: Students meet both language arts and social studies objectives in this interdisciplinary unit on customs and cultures. In part 1 of the unit students practice research and writing skills to create a slideshow. In part 2 of the unit students explore culture through games and work with a partner to write a page in a class how-to book.

Title: Digging In For Dirt Day!
Description: This lesson is managed through stations that students will rotate around every 20- 30 minutes. Each second grade teacher conducts one station. Parent volunteers can also be used to manage stations. Students will use an auger to gather soil, produce a soil painting, make a dirt cup to represent layers of soil, do a Shake It Up! activity to examine how soil settles, and examine local soil. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Traditions At Home and Around the World
Description: Each student will research his/her own family traditions and report findings to the class using presentation software. In partner groups, students will select a country to research. Their research will focus on traditions of a chosen country and will be compiled in brochure format.

Title: Monster Descriptions
Description: The class will participate in an Internet project called Monster Exchange. They will partner with another class to exchange directions on drawing a monster. They will then share the monsters drawn from the directions by posting them on the Monster Exchange website.
