Description: This lesson is about using detective skills to be better nonfiction readers. Students will gather clues from the text to make assumptions and connections that will solve, and make meaning about the text. The students will use nonfiction text context clues, and pictures to realize that the author’s purpose is for them to find ALL the clues and make meaning of a topic. Students use clues such as text evidence to make connections and understand text.   Students use key details such as text evidence to gather information about a topic or the authors intended purpose.

Title: The Empty Pot
Description: This lesson will help students identify the moral of the story The Empty Pot by Demi. During this lesson, students will have an opportunity to discuss and write about the character trait honesty. Students will share about a time when they demonstrated this character trait. Title: Giddy Up Cinderella
Description: Students will read two different western versions of the story Cinderella. They will engage in activities where they will compare and contrast different versions of the story.  Students will participate in listening, speaking, and writing activities that require them to reflect on the stories. Title: A Weed is a Flower
Description: In this lesson, students will learn to identify the main purpose of a text and distinguish it from their own point of view with the book A Weed is a Flower:  The Life of George Washington Carver by Aliki and other informational texts. Title: Splish! Splash!
Description: Let's get wet and wild with this exciting unit on the ocean!  Through the use of wonderful literature, art projects, research, and much more, the students will expand their understanding of what life is like for the creatures of the ocean. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Jet, Set, Go! Travel Google Earth in Ben's Dream
Description: This lesson uses the picture book by Chris Van Allsburg Ben’s Dream with Google Earth to highlight ten major landmarks of the world. After reading and discussing Ben’s Dream, students "travel" to each location using the free software Google Earth. Students will then be put into small groups by the teacher to research one specific landmark using the tools available on Google Earth (i.e., snapshots, Wikipedia links, etc.). Using their research skills, students locate these famous landmarks, conduct further research on them, and share that information with the class.

Title: The Biography Project: Exploring the Past in 21st Century Ways
Description: Through this project-based lesson, students will do research on and create an oral presentation based on the life of an influential Famous American. Students will utilize various means to glean information, from online databases, various websites, and age-appropriate biographical literature to prepare for the final product: a "Living Wax Museum." Students will determine the most relevant information to write a script presented in the form of an oral presentation. The presentations will also be recorded and published as a podcast for sharing on the teacher's website.

Title: Learning to Clean Tables by Using Sign Language/Picture Symbols
Description: This is a L.I.F.E Skills functional and reading lesson using sign language and picture symbols for a severe/profound class with little or no verbal expressive language skills.

Title: Fortune Cookie Verbs
Description: During this lesson students have the opportunity to create fortune cookies and identify the verbs in the fortunes.

Title: Play the Dewey Decimal System Game
Description: This lesson introduces the 10 main categories used in the Dewey Decimal Classification System for non-fiction bookshelf arrangement. A slideshow will be presented to students to help them learn details about the Dewey Decimal Classification System. Students will be able to demonstrate what they learn through participating in an interactive game.

Title: Persuasive Writing with Second Graders
Description: During this lesson students will search a piece of persuasive writing to find details supporting their position. They will participate in a group activity involving brainstorming and writing a persuasive letter, and will then complete their own individual piece of persuasive writing.

Title: On the Loose With Dr. Seuss
Description: Students will survey teachers in order to find out the titles of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. They will work in small groups and use digital cameras to take pictures of each teacher and his/her favorite book.

Title: Dig It!
Description: Children will enjoy learning about dinosaurs through the use of technology, research, hands-on activities, discussions, and written and oral presentations. This unit will help students to collaborate as a group and manage their own time.

Title: Introduction to the Dewey Decimal System
Description: This lesson introduces the Dewey Decimal System of numbering used for arranging nonfiction books on the shelves of an elementary school library.

Title: Habitats
Description: What is a habitat? In this lesson, students will identify that a habitat has four elements, food, water, shelter, and space. Students will identify their own habitat and create a brochure describing the habitat in terms of food, water, shelter, and space. They will work in cooperative groups to create a multimedia presentation describing the food, water, shelter, and space needs of one animal.

Title: Text-to-Self and Text-to-World Connections in Reading
Description: Students will further their reading comprehension by associating real-life events with the events of a story.

Description: The students will work from a computer and a specified Webquest to complete a unit on spiders. The lessons will incorporate literature, writing, science, art, and graphing.

Title: President's Day for Special Education/Early Elementary
Description: This lesson helps special education/early elementary students learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and discuss how each demonstrated the character trait of honesty.
