Title: Don't get lost in story writing: Follow the map!
Description: In this lesson, teachers will guide the students, as a group, through the process of writing a meaningful story using a story map. First the teacher will review the parts that make up a successful story. Then, the students will be guided through the planning process in which they will make selections for each part of the story. At the end of the exercise, the students will experience how each selection they made as a group, combines to make one cohesive story. Once the group activity is complete, students will have the opportunity to plan and write stories individually using the same story map.

Title: Sharing Original Nursery Rhymes (Distance Learning)
Description: Collaboration of creative writing/creative dramatics using Distance Learning. With a partner, students will write an original nursery rhyme and share/present with another class (Distance Learning) through presentations (dramatization, puppet show, illustration/book, PowerPoint, etc.).

Title: "What do we do? Natural Disasters in the United States"
Description: During the course of this lesson, the students will research various forms of natural disasters that occur in the United States and what someone should do in the event of that disaster. The teacher and library media specialist will collaborate during the planning, instruction, and research phases of this lesson. The students will take the information they collected and place it on a PowerPoint presentation to be presented to the class. This information should include several pictures that will be located on the Internet. The Library Media Specialist will guide the students through the process of obtaining permission for the use of various images.

Title: The Causes of Pollution
Description: In this lesson, the students will identify the types of pollution found in communities by viewing a video. After discussing the types of pollution, the students will discuss ways pollution can be controlled. Students will also explain why it is important to keep communities free of pollution by creating a poster.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project.

Title: The Rockin' Rock Cycle: Metamorphic Rocks
Description: The rock cycle consists of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. This lesson will focus on metamorphic rocks and how they form.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Making and Observing Life in a Terrarium
Description: In this lesson, the students will learn what a terrarium is, the layers of a terrarium, and the function of these layers. They will see how these components work together to create an ecosystem. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Distance Learning Collaborative Literature Circles: Because of Winn Dixie
Description: During this lesson, two classes in different locations will participate separately in literature circles using Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. The discussion of the book will be a collaborative project using distance learning.

Title: Montgomery Field Trip Tour Book
Description: During this lesson, students explore the functions of our government through the Internet, slideshow presentations, and by visiting Alabama's capital city of Montgomery. Students will use their field trip as a guide to create a tour book of the government in Montgomery.

Title: Making Predictions
Description: This lesson will use the trade book, Balto, the Dog Who Saved Nome, to teach making predictions. Students will also learn the true story of Balto and create their own fictional story of Balto.

Title: Preparing for Natural Disasters
Description: This social studies lesson provides information and safety tips for different natural disasters. It integrates technology, writing, and art activities. The included slideshow may be presented to the whole group, or students may navigate it independently or in small groups.

Title: Narrative Writing: "A Day in the Life of ..."
Description: In this lesson, students will use what they have learned about narrative writing in an authentic situation. This is part of a welcome packet for students who are new to the school. Students will work in groups to conduct research and compose narrative essays telling about a typical day in the life of a kindergartner, first grader, etc. The project will culminate in the creation of a brochure and slideshow presentation that can be used by teachers to introduce new students to their class.

Title: Writing with Presentation Software
Description: During this lesson students use their imaginations to create short stories. Then they create alternative endings to their classmates' stories. Students present their stories using presentation software.

Title: The Stupendous Dodgeball Fiasco by Janice Repka
Description: This lesson will lead students in relating literature to their own lives. The book, The Stupendous Dodgeball Fiasco, will be read aloud to students. Afterward, students will create short stories about things which they'd like to change around their school.

Title: Composers Then and Now
Description: During this lesson students will have the opportunity to research the following composers: Kenny G, W.C. Handy, Johannes Brahms, and Amadeus Mozart. Students will learn to navigate the Internet to locate important facts. They will also learn to use publishing software to create a brochure from the information they collect.

Title: Kids Search In The Classroom
Description: This is a technology-based lesson that will focus on using the Kids Search database in the Alabama Virtual Library. Students will work in teams to access information about animals. This lesson will allow students to research a particular animal and write a report on the information they collected.

Title: Proper Noun Race
Description: During this lesson, students will review nouns and identify common and proper nouns in context. A short story will be written using both types of nouns. An interactive Internet site will be used to reinforce the lesson.

Title: Sandwich Story Starters
Description: These simple activities actively reinforce the importance of writing a story that is complete: one that has a good, solid beginning; a middle of substance, detail, and high interest; and a satisfying ending.

Title: Quotations and Commas
Description: During this lesson students will have the opportunity to learn the proper way to use quotations and commas. They will view information on the Internet and participate in online activities to help them master this concept.

Title: Writing Friendly Letters
Description: This lesson teaches students the five parts of a friendly letter. Students will be able to write friendly letters utilizing the writing process. Students will visit various websites to learn more about writing friendly letters. Students will also create a letter by navigating a website on the Internet. The students will use a word processing program to develop their finished products.

Title: Dr. Seuss on the Loose: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
Description: In Dr. Seuss’ first published children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, Marco, inspired by the passing of a horse and wagon, imagines a series of increasingly incredible sights on his way home from school. This story provides a springboard for discussing the concepts of honesty, imagination, and creativity and for exploring the difference between dishonesty and creativity. Students will learn to recognize when it is appropriate to weave an elaborate tale and when it is not.

Title: Time Flies
Description: This lesson plan is one of the first in a unit on telling time which addresses the following content areas: language arts, math, science, social studies, and technology. Students will read several resource books to gather information. They will then sequence information in a timeline. The final project will be a slideshow presentation.

Title: Just Plain Living
Description: Students work through a teacher-prepared Webquest in order to learn about the art, food, shelter, clothing, etc. of the Plains Indians. Internet resources are used to collect information in order to make group presentations to the class. Students have the opportunity to decide among several projects to complete in order to demonstrate what they have learned.

Title: Because of Winn-Dixie: A New Point of View
Description: This is a language arts lesson concentrating on point of view and narrative writing. Using the novel Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo, students practice retelling part of a story from another point of view.

Title: Creating State Brochures
Description: Students will work in pairs to research online and/or in print a chosen state and create a travel brochure incorporating the information gathered.

Description: In this lesson, students will discuss the classification of animals. They will work in groups to research and present classification information about a selected group of animals.

Description: This is a fun lesson to demonstrate the power of words to describe a simple chocolate treat prior to writing a five-paragraph descriptive essay.

Description: The teacher will use charts, worksheets, and websites to orient students about the five parts of a friendly letter.

Description: Students will write acrostic poems using scientific information about various landforms. These poems will reinforce concepts learned in science.

Description: In this lesson students will do a variety of learning activities while they meet many math, science, and language arts objectives. Students will measure items, analyze and record data, listen to instructions, and follow directions. They will also follow a recipe to make a creative dessert.
