Title: What's the Theme?
Description: This lesson is a beginning lesson to use to introduce the skill of theme. Students will read two picture books "Ranita, the Frog Princess" and "Frankly, I Never Wanted to Kiss Anybody!" determine the theme for each then compare them in a writing assignment.

Title: Book Boxes: Analyzing Elements of a Story
Description: In this lesson, students will listen to a read aloud and view a model of the project expected related to the first read aloud.  Students will then complete a group project based on a story read as a class. (This can be done as a read aloud or in literature circle groups.)  The books used in this particular activity are Bud, Not Buddy and The Watsons go to Birmingham.

Title: Time to Summarize: Summarizing Information from Multiple Sources
Description: Students will read an informational text and watch a video about clocks and time.  Students will use the information from both sources to develop a summary. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Interactive Poetry - Learning Poetic Elements and Structure Through Exploration
Description: This is an online exploration poetry lesson.  Students will navigate through the interactive PowerPoint presentation and complete different tasks while acquiring knowledge on the various aspects of poetry. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Living in the Wild
Description: In this lesson, students will compare and contrast how the Prehistoric Americans lived off the land at Russell Cave and how Sam Gribley from "My Side of the Mountain" lived off the land. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.

Title: Clerihew Poetry
Description: Cooperative poetry writing assignment.  Students will write and share poetry using the Clerihew style.  Students will also give a group presentation of their poems.

Title: Newberry Award
Description: This unit will introduce the history of the Newberry Award to students. The selection process will be discussed. Students will also visit websites and the library to select a Newberry book to read. Finally, students will give book talks to accompany slideshows they have created.

Title: Helen Who?
Description: In this lesson, students will be introduced to the contributions of Helen Keller. The students will learn about Helen Keller through research on the Internet, a book, and a role-playing exercise.

Title: Exploring the World of Cinderella Tales
Description: Students will read three different Cinderella tales, including tales from Africa, China, and America. Upon completion of a Venn diagram comparing the similarities and differences of these tales, the students will complete and present multimedia presentations showing their results.

Title: Multimedia Book Report
Description: This lesson gives students a clear understanding of how to create a slide show presentation using PowerPoint. The students will use this information to create a slide show book report.

Title: Character Education - Respect for Self, Property, Others and The Environment
Description: This lesson will be implemented as part of a character education unit on respect for self, property, others and the environment, an essential quality of good character. Students will apply research skills, open-ended discussions, keyboarding skills, digital photography, and cooperative learning experiences to investigate and internalize the meaning of respect. This lesson will also aid students in understanding how respect is viewed in other cultures.

Description: In this lesson students develop a time line of important events in relation to space exploration.

Description: This is a lesson for students in grades 4-6 to learn visualization, prediction, and sequencing.

Title: Can you solve the problem?
Description: During this lesson, students will analyze ways in which the character(s) in stories solve problems encountered. Students will brainstorm in small groups possible solutions to realistic problems in order to enhance connections to problems found in literature. Students will then explore problems/solutions in a selection of picture books.
