Title: Is this FAKE?
Description: Students will take a trip back in time and look at the lifestyles and classes of people in the late 1800s. Using a WebQuest, text, and graphic organizers, students will learn about the class systems in the 1800s and how the use of symbolism increased the point of interest within the story. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Com'on Down To Eatonville, Florida
Description: You are Mayor Joe Starks from the book Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, and you want more people to relocate to Eatonville, Florida. Identify five amenities that may make Eatonville attractive to African-Americans looking for a place to establish themselves. Using these amenities, draft a thirty to sixty second audio advertisement or draft a one-hundred word advertisement to be published in the Orlando Sentinel.

Title: Digital Story Writing: Cultural Myths
Description: You are a folklorist observing the lives and cultures of different people. You want to tell the world about  their culture, beliefs, and values. You and a group of other folklorist are going to research the lives of a an ethnic group, and create a digital story about their lives, and present it to all the folklorist at the "Who are They?" convention.

Title: Google in the Classroom: Using Google Docs to Write for Audience, Context, and Purpose
Description: Students write and digitally publish a weekly newsletter using Google Docs. The content will be a synthesis of interesting issues from their class as well as some outside news and issues which directly impact students. The target audience will be students, faculty, and administration, as well as parents and the larger community. This lesson is based on the webpage "Writing for Context" by Andrea Zellner.

Title: Unfortunate Fortunato
Description: You are a local police detective, your task is to investigate the disappearance of Fortunata. Retrace his steps leading up to his disappearance. Remember to interview anyone that may have seen him that night. After gathering all of your information, write a detailed missing person's report on behalf of Fortunato's family detaining Fortunato's last day on earth.  


Subject: English Language Arts (7 - 10), or English Language Arts (7 - 10)
Title: Hands, Hands, Hands - Writing a Narrative Essay from the Perspective of a Particular Hand
Description: The teacher will show pictures of six hands to students.  (See attachment)  After a brainstorming session, students will choose one hand that illustrates a particular story from their life.  Then, students will write a two page narrative essay about this story.  These stories will be posted on a class blog to allow for feedback and discussion from classmates.

Title: The Devil and Tom Walker Newsletter
Description: Students will create a newsletter with information taken from the short story "The Devil and Tom Walker." Students will work in pairs and decide which parts of the newsletter each will be responsible for completing.   The finished newsletter will be published for the class to view.

Title: This is my life!
Description: This assignment requires you to write about your own life, your family, and the things that are influencing you so far in your personal journey. The result will be a short autobiography of your own…and hopefully a little more self-knowledge to take with you as you consider your journey in the years to come.

Title: Graphing Gallery Walk
Description: In this lesson, students will participate in a gallery walk to realize the vast amount of information found in a graph. Students will make notes of the graphs as they rotate through the gallery. At the conclusion, students will create a story from an assigned graph.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: If I Read It, It Must Be True
Description: Working in groups, students identify methods of propaganda and analyze television, magazine, and Internet ads. Groups then create their own ad using one of the identified methods.

Title: Translating Short Stories into Original Short Films
Description: After reviewing the elements of the short story, students develop a script and storyboard from a published or original story. Students then film and edit a video of the story to present during a class film festival.

Title: Sharing Summer Reading Through Literature Circles
Description: This lesson allows students to discuss the assigned summer reading in literature circles with respect to plot, character, and theme. Students work in groups of three to four to produce a slideshow presentation of one of the novels read. Each group shares its presentation with the class.

Description: In this lesson, from EDSITEment, students explore the values of courage and patriotism in Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage. They closely read Chapter 23 and compare it with a more traditional tale of combat and a systematic look at an early reviewer's accusations. Using their new understanding, students are asked to select one of three published endings to The Red Badge of Courage best suited to their understanding of Crane's exploration of values in the novel.
