Title: A Comparison of Puritan Authors and Their Viewpoints on God and the Devil, PART 2
Description: This lesson is meant to directly follow "A Comparison of Puritan Authors and Their Viewpoints on God and the Devil." Students are introduced to the basic concept of Bloom's Taxonomy of Knowledge, and then asked to apply the taxonomy to the activities they participated in from the previous lesson using Google Docs.

Title: Learn the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) System: Research Depends on It!
Description: The students will develop an understanding of the organization of main and primary subclasses of the Library of Congress Classification System. The students will demonstrate knowledge and independence in using the LCC through online tutorials and by visiting a college library (optional).

Title: Preparing to Write the Research Paper: An Information Location Mini-lesson
Description: This lesson introduces students to research materials in the library and electronic materials available through the Alabama Virtual Library(AVL). The instruction emphasizes "how-to-use" multi-volume encyclopedias, multi-volume reference sets, books, and various electronic databases. Instruction includes where to locate bibliographic information within these various materials for a research paper and how to cite bibliographic information.

Title: Evaluating Eyewitness Reports      Add Bookmark
Description: This lesson, from EDSITEment, offers students experience in drawing historical meaning from eyewitness accounts that present a range of different perspectives. Students begin with a case study including alternative reports of a single event: the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Students compare two newspaper reports on the fire and two memoirs of the fire written many decades later, with an eye on how these accounts complement and compete with one another, and how these sources can be used to draw historical meaning from them. Students then apply the lessons learned in their investigation of the eyewitness accounts of the Chicago fire by considering a unique eyewitness account: the diary kept by a Confederate girl when her Tennessee town was occupied by Union troops during the Civil War.

Description: This two-part lesson from EDSITEment draws on letters written by African Americans in slavery and by free blacks to loved ones still in bondage, singling out a few among the many slave experiences to offer students a glimpse into slavery and its effects on African American family life. In Part I, students examine the letters of Hannah Valentine, an enslaved woman who lived on a Virginia plantation. In Part II, students read letters from a fugitive slave to his still-enslaved wife and from a black Union soldier to his still-enslaved daughters, confronting directly the anguish of separation that was a constant factor in African American family life during slave times, when children and parents, husbands and wives, were routinely sold away from one another. Students explore the emotional terrain revealed in these letters by comparing the response to separation voiced by Valentine with that voiced by the Union soldier and the fugitive slave.

The goals of this lesson plan are to learn about the role of women in traditional African village life, to understand the contextual nature of artwork within traditional African village life, to become familiar with women writers of postcolonial Africa, and to examine how the traditions of village life influence postcolonial literature.
