Title: The Truth About Slavery
Description: As an introduction to The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, the class will see what slavery was like in the deep South as well as in the Colonial South.  As the autobiography is discussed, the students will read other texts and see some video relating to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, The Civil War, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.

Title: Research Project: American Heroes - Collaborative Education
Description: This lesson is designed to help students of all backgrounds learn to work together in groups to complete a research paper assignment. This is a collaborative based lesson plan that challenges students to work together to complete the assignment as a warm-up to the individual research paper required at the end of the term. It is a technology-based lesson with student presentations and student guided research. It is a cross curriculum based lesson with areas of history and technology integrated within the lesson's content.

Title: Holocaust Research Project
Description: Students will create a slide presentation in cooperative learning groups proving that the Holocaust did indeed occur.

Title: Harlem Renaissance Authors and the Impact on the 21st Century
Description: As part of a study of the Harlem Renaissance, students will do research on a Harlem Renaissance author. Individually, students will use websites to gain information about the author and the author's impact in literature and society. Students will relate writings from the author to issues found in the 21st century. Students will then create a photostory of the author to be shared with the class.

Title: American Historical Fiction Journal
Description: In this American literature (1900-2000) creative research paper project, each student creates an original work of American historical fiction using his/her knowledge of the research process. Students identify and address the ways culture, technology, and social customs are reflected in American literature from 1900 to the present.

Title: Learn the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) System: Research Depends on It!
Description: The students will develop an understanding of the organization of main and primary subclasses of the Library of Congress Classification System. The students will demonstrate knowledge and independence in using the LCC through online tutorials and by visiting a college library (optional).

Title: Interpreting Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream
Description: After a study of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, students working in small groups conduct research and create a slideshow presentation that emphasizes key aspects of the play and/or new ideas generated by the play.

Title: Preparing to Write the Research Paper: An Information Location Mini-lesson
Description: This lesson introduces students to research materials in the library and electronic materials available through the Alabama Virtual Library(AVL). The instruction emphasizes "how-to-use" multi-volume encyclopedias, multi-volume reference sets, books, and various electronic databases. Instruction includes where to locate bibliographic information within these various materials for a research paper and how to cite bibliographic information.

Title: Evaluating Eyewitness Reports      Add Bookmark
Description: This lesson, from EDSITEment, offers students experience in drawing historical meaning from eyewitness accounts that present a range of different perspectives. Students begin with a case study including alternative reports of a single event: the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Students compare two newspaper reports on the fire and two memoirs of the fire written many decades later, with an eye on how these accounts complement and compete with one another, and how these sources can be used to draw historical meaning from them. Students then apply the lessons learned in their investigation of the eyewitness accounts of the Chicago fire by considering a unique eyewitness account: the diary kept by a Confederate girl when her Tennessee town was occupied by Union troops during the Civil War.

Description: In this EDSITEment lesson, students can gain insight into the lives of some black women in Sub-Saharan Africa by adopting a perspective that is in part traditional, based on the arts of African village life, and in part postcolonial, based on the work of African women writing in English and French today. The goals of this lesson plan are to learn about the role of women in traditional African village life, to understand the contextual nature of artwork within traditional African village life, to become familiar with women writers of postcolonial Africa, and to examine how the traditions of village life influence postcolonial literature.
