Title: Jump at 'de Sun!  Let's become Zoraheads!
Description: Students will learn about Zora Neale Hurston as the beginning of a unit on Their Eyes were Watching God.  Using the essay "How it Feels to be Colored Me," students will discuss the use of metaphors in correlation to Hurston's life.  Students will also construct a poem using metaphors pertaining to their own lives.  This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: The Challenges and New Inventions of the Great Plains Farmer.
Description: Students will work in groups of four to create presentations using their research on a particular farming invention that was created from (1837-1867) and also research specific elements about life on the Great Plains. Each group's presentation will be merged into a final class presentation.

Title: Reader's Theater with "Death of the Hired Man" by Robert Frost
Description: Students will read the poem "Death of the Hired Man" in cooperative learning groups using Reader's Theater to obtain a better understanding of the author's use of characterization through dialogue.

Title: Life After High School
Description: Life After High School is a career research assignment that gives students an opportunity to plan their career path after high school. Even if students deviate from their plan, they need to have a tentative idea that allows them to set goals. Students will learn about their potential career, educational requirements, and learn whether they are currently preparing themselves for their chosen career path.

Title: Harlem Renaissance Authors and the Impact on the 21st Century
Description: As part of a study of the Harlem Renaissance, students will do research on a Harlem Renaissance author. Individually, students will use websites to gain information about the author and the author's impact in literature and society. Students will relate writings from the author to issues found in the 21st century. Students will then create a photostory of the author to be shared with the class.

Title: Dead Poets Society: Socratic Seminar Discussion
Description: As a springboard to an eleventh grade poetry unit, students view the movie Dead Poets Society and participate in a Socratic seminar of the themes, symbols, and life questions raised by the film. Student groups research and present one of the poems used in the film.

Title: Of Mice and Men
Description: This is a technology-based group project. It requires students to use the Internet as well as various types of software to creatively display their knowledge of the novel, Of Mice and Men.

Title: Interpreting Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream
Description: After a study of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, students working in small groups conduct research and create a slideshow presentation that emphasizes key aspects of the play and/or new ideas generated by the play.
