Title: Treasure Hunt
Description: Get hands-on with students in building a map with a class.  Take students outside to a sandbox and work with them to build a map of campus.  Once the map is drawn you can turn their design into a treasure hunt to assess map interpretation.


Subject: Physical Education (2 - 3), or Social Studies (K - 2)
Title: Capture the Flag
Description: Try this twist on a schoolyard favorite.  Teams are given incomplete maps and need to read the map in order to find the pieces of the map covering enemy territory.  Only then can they seek out their opponents flag to win.

Title: Handy Map      Add Bookmark
Description: This lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, engages students in creating a map of their hands. It provides purpose for using directional or positional words with mapping. The teacher draws an outline of his or her hands and begins mapping them using words the students suggest. This allows the teacher to assess positional concepts students currently know and to build on that knowledge. Students then create a simple map.

They then search through magazines such as National Geographic for photographs that illustrate the range of those characteristics. They also chart the locations they find on a map of the world.

Description: This Xpeditions lesson has students practice their knowledge of the cardinal directions by having them describe the directions in their classroom. They practice figuring out the relative directions of other places (such as another classroom or the office) in relation to their classroom. They conclude by taping signs with place names around the room to show the directions they would travel to get to those places.

Description: In this lesson, from Xpeditions, students are introduced to some of the basics of earthquakes and volcanoes. They are also asked to think about how people living in cities and suburbs must plan ahead by constructing sturdy buildings and preparing their homes and themselves for the possibility of a natural disaster. Students are therefore introduced to some basic concepts of physical geography, as well as some of the ways in which the physical environment affects people's lives.
