Using a Venn Diagram to Compare and Contrast Nonfiction

This is an introductory activity on comparing and contrasting an informational text. Students will use a digital tool to label and create a 2-circle Venn diagram.  In this activity, it is used as part of a language arts lesson on comparing and contrasting two topics of an informational text.

    Learning Objectives

    Learning Objectives

The student will be able to identify information from a nonfiction text that is the same (comparing) and different (contrasting).

The student will be able to give the Venn Diagram a title and label each circle of the 2 circle diagram.

The student will use the information located in the text to complete the online Venn Diagram.

    Activity Details

This is an introductory activity on comparing and contrasting an informational text.

For the opening activity, the teacher will have students record initial associations on post it notes with the word compare and the word contrast.  Students will be given 2-5 minutes to write silently.

The teacher will then lead a brief discussion about what the students wrote.  Together the class will come up with a definition for compare and for contrast.

The teacher will pull up the power point on Houses and Nests.

The teacher and students will read aloud the slide that describes both houses and nests.

The teacher will lead a discussion of the slide that highlights the clue words in the text to help students.

The teacher will leave the text projected on the screen.

Students work with a partner and go to the Venn Diagram Tool to create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast a house and a nest.
