Overview

Marble Math is a game on www.abcya.com that allows students to practice addition with manipulatives. Students can use the tool to practice addition. The game tracks the students' progress and shows students which answers are correct and incorrect. Students can use virtual manipulatives to assist them in correctly adding a number sentence. As students progress to the next level the problems get more difficult.

    Knowledge

    Students know:
    • characteristics of addition and subtraction contexts such as putting together, adding to, taking apart, and taking from.
    • Strategies for efficiently determining sums and differences within five.

    Skills

    Students are able to:
    • Use addition strategies efficiently.

    Understanding

    Students understand that:
    • Fluency involves a mixture of "just knowing" answers, knowing answers from patterns, and knowing answers from the use of strategies. The word fluently is used in the standards to mean accurately, efficiently, and flexibly.
    Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): KG

Students will solve addition problems by using objects to represent the problem.

Students will fluently add within 5.

    Activity Details

The students will use the website to use virtual manipulatives to perform addition problems. The students will complete this game after a whole group math lesson on addition. This website will be placed as a center during small group math centers.

    Assessment Strategies

    Assessment Strategies

The students will be assessed at the end of the game. The website checks each answer and lets students know how many they got correct. The teacher will have students alert her when they are finished with each round of the game.

    Variation Tips

Students can write their own marble math addition sentence and draw marbles to represent their problem.
