Title: Alabama's Pine Barren
Students will read a description of the pine barrens by Basil Hall and analyze the text by using the 3-2-1 strategy. Students will discuss the life and work of Basil Hall, including his travels and journaling in North America. They will observe how a camera lucida functions and debate whether using a camera lucida is "cheating" in art. Next, students will venture outside to create a sketch of their environment while appropriately utilizing materials. They will compare and contrast their products to the sketches of Basil Hall and critique each other's work.

Title: Where Did My Sunflowers Van Gogh?
Students will read about the life of Vincent Van Gogh and observe how the events of his life shaped his art. Students will view various works by the artist and evaluate the changes in them. Students will then create a still life sunflower portrait interpretation based on the works of Vincent Van Gogh.

Title: Carle's Crazy Critters
This lesson provides students with the opportunity to read books aloud to the class. Students also spend time researching Eric Carle and his practices as a writer and illustrator. Finally, students become writers and illustrators themselves, as they create their own books and present their books to younger students.

Title: Expressive Expressionist Faces
Students will learn about Expressionist artists and the strategies they used in their artworks. The students will also produce an Expressionist artwork using some of those strategies as well as develop a slideshow presentation about an Expressionist artist.

Title: Digital Camera Self-Portraits
Third graders use digital cameras and draw/paint software to create original self-portraits.

Title: What's Your Style?
Through collaboration with the art teacher and library media specialist, students will use various electronic information sources to research an artist and discover the style of the artist through examination of the artist's work. Students will create their own miniatures in the style of their artist. A poster will be used to present their research information and miniatures. The art teacher will provide instruction concerning the basic concepts of presentation using a poster.
