General Activity Information
 Activity ID: 2521 Title: Snap to It... Making Numbers Digital Tool/Resource: Number Card Deck (1-20) Web Address – URL: https://nrich.maths.org/content/id/8506/1-20NumberCards.pdf Overview: This learning activity is a fun and interactive game. It will develop number sense by composing and decomposing numbers as well as building a foundation for place value skills. It can be used in whole group and small group instruction.  Before this game, the students will need to know strategies for making numbers in different ways. After the students are comfortable with this game, it can be varied by playing it with breaking into three parts. Students will have the opportunity to use several of the mathematical practices. This task allows the teacher to assess students' mathematical understanding.This activity results from the ALEX Resource Development Summit.
Associated Standards and Objectives
Content Standard(s):
 Mathematics MA2015 (2016) Grade: 1 6 ) Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13). [1-OA6] Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards AAS Standard: M.AAS.1.6- Add and subtract numbers 1 to 15 using objects, pictures, and fingers. ELJ Mathematics MA2015 (2016) Grade: 1 8 ) Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. [1-OA8] ELJ
Learning Objectives:

• The student will add and subtract within 20.
• The student will use relationships between addition and subtraction.
• The student will determine the unknown whole number in addition equations and subtraction equations relating to three whole numbers.
• The student will justify and explain their strategies to others.
