Slope! Tilting the Learning Curve With Video
Digital Tool/Resource:
YouTube Video: Slope Music Video
Web Address – URL:

The YouTube video "Slope Music Video" is a video that introduces the concept of slope and slope-intercept form of a linear equation.

  Associated Standards and Objectives
Content Standard(s):
MA2015 (2016)
Grade: 9-12
Algebra I
46 ) Interpret the slope (rate of change) and the intercept (constant term) of a linear model in the context of the data. [S-ID7]

Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards
AAS Standard:
M.AAS.SP.HS.46- Given a graph that describes a set of linear data, identify the rate of change (slope) and constant term (y-intercept). (Use context of data—the total price of the stamps is calculated by increasing 50 cents for every stamp purchased or the cost if no stamps are purchased is $0.)

Learning Objectives:

  1. The student will interpret the rate of change (slope) of a linear equation.
  2. The student will interpret the constant term (y-intercept) of a linear equation.
  Strategies, Preparations and Variations

After watching the introductory video, distribute pre-graphed lines to pairs of students.

Students will create a word problem that will reflect the characteristics of the given line.

Each group will present their word problem to their classmates for them to interpret the given information and recreate the linear equation.

Groups will then share the original graph and the teacher will be able to use the results as a formative assessment to direct/guide the remainder of the learning experience.

Assessment Strategies:

The teacher will evaluate the group presentation to determine progress toward standard.

Advanced Preparation:

  • The teacher will need to preview the video to make sure the link is still active.
  • The teacher will need to make sure audio components are working with internal speakers and/or external speakers.
Variation Tips (optional):

  • The teacher can use the video as a review of a previous lesson to remind students of the concept of slope and slope-intercept form of an equation.
  • The teacher can use the video to inspire the students to create their own video and/or rap song that explains the concept of slope and slope-intercept form of a line.
