Overview:

After studying the primary reasons for the Fall of Rome, students will collaborate to create a video where they compare/contrast the events that led to the Fall of Rome and what is happening in the United States today. Is America following in their footsteps?

*This activity may take several days for students to complete.

Activity:

*This lesson is to be completed after studying the events that led to the Fall of Rome.

  • Divide students into groups of four and assign jobs using the job cards.

  • Student groups will collaborate to develop a list of the primary reasons for the Fall of Rome and compare them to events that have happened or are happening in America today. Students will answer the question: What were the primary reasons for the Fall of Rome and is America following in their footsteps?

  • Students will collaborate to write a script for their breaking news report. *Once completed, groups will submit to Google Classroom.

  • Based on student jobs, research will be conducted, works will be cited, videos will be taken, and pictures and videos will be uploaded. *Please look at the checklist to see the checkpoints along the way. Students will need to upload evidence along the way in Google Classroom.

  • Students will use a video editing tool to create their breaking news report.

    Tools that can be used: WeVideo (a free video editing tool, limited to 5-minute video), Windows Movie Maker, and iMovie.

  • Student groups will share news report with class.

Advanced Preparation:

  • Familiarize yourself with the video editing tool of your choice. (WeVideo (a video editing tool, limited to 5-minute video), Windows Movie Maker (video editing program on Windows computers), or iMovie (video editing program on Apple products.)

  • Create an assignment in Google Classroom where students can upload components of their project (based on evidence needed which is listed on the grading checklist.)
Variation Tips (optional):

A variety of video editing tools can be used based on the operating system and/or device you are using to record and edit the video(s).
