In this lesson, students will learn to identify the main purpose of a text and distinguish it from their own point of view with the book A Weed is a Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver by Aliki and other informational texts.

Other informational texts such as:
Ibis: A True Whale Story by John Himmelman
Martin Luther King and the March on Washington by Frances Ruffin
Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby Beeler
Attached Author's Purpose graphic organizer (copied on front/back, one per student)
Technology Resources Needed:
George Washington Carver - History Video
Computer with Internet access
Digital projector or interactive whiteboard
Gather listed books
Make copies of graphic organizer
Check attached website for accessibility
1. Watch video about George Washington Carver.
2. On sticky pads, write personality traits about George.
3. Turn and talk with partner.
4. Place notes on chart paper labeled "George Washington Carver = Perseverance". Discuss the word "perseverance" and how it applies to George.
5. Read the story to students. Stop often to discuss the main purpose of each section and to distinguish their own point of view from that of the author. Note times that George showed perseverance on the chart paper.
6. Complete Author's Point of View graphic organizer together.
7. Students will work in small groups to design a poster of George Washington Carver's contributions.
8. Posters will be shared with class.
Partners will be given an informational text (see books listed above) to read. Students will then individually complete the same Author's Point of View graphic organizer. Graphic organizer will be checked for accuracy.
Students who have advanced computer skills will be allowed to research George Washington Carver on the Internet. They will report interesting facts to the class.
Students who did not master this standard will meet with the teacher individually or in small groups for remediation.
