Title: Native Cultures Vs. Explorers in World Court
Description: This lesson represents the end result of a project-based, hands-on unit in which children represent a culture they've researched in a World Court Hearing against the explorers they encountered.

Title: Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion
Description: Students engage in a discussion of "Manifest Destiny" using a timeline of events from 1830 - 1860, and a biographical sketch of a real person who lived during that time period.  During the discussion, students will use the biography to interpret and infer how the real person might have felt.  A discussion guide is provided.  Students provide a written answer to the final discussion question to summarize their understanding of the issue.

Title: The Evidence of Chemistry
Description: The students will learn to identify evidence that a chemical reaction has taken place.  They will use the Internet to research evidence and find examples.  They will look around their school and neighborhood for examples. They will perform experiments in the science lab. The students will make a podcast, slideshow presentation, or a digital story board to show the types of evidence they collected and examples of each.

Title: River's Path
Description: What determines the path of a river? Rivers follow the path of least resistance changing the landscape by carrying sediment and debris along the way.

Title: Angles in the Mix
Description: In this lesson, students will observe art paintings for angles - straight, right, obtuse, and acute. Using digital cameras, students will find "art" in their environment, which displays those same types of angles. They will use their photos to create a Photo Story describing the angles in their environmental art and share it with the class. Lastly, students will choose one of their photos to paint and label the angles found in their art.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: "Twenty Questions" History Virtual Fieldtrip
Description: During this lesson, students engage in a virtual game of "Twenty Questions" with another class. They will utilize textbooks, trade books, the Alabama Virtual Library, and other Internet sites for reference. Each team (class) will be assigned ten historical figures from the American Revolution. The identities remain hidden from the other team. Students also have the opportunity to investigate the appropriate dress of each figure and then dress ten students accordingly. Students will make a list of important events and dates in the persons’ lives to use as reference during the game.

Title: Our New Nation
Description: After studying the American Revolutionary War, students learn about the founding of the United States of America. Pretending to be the founding fathers, students will divide into small groups to create and design their own nation and system of government for the colonies. They will create the laws, economic system, powers of government, pledge, national symbol, anthem, etc. Students will create a presentation about their "new nation." The groups will give an oral presentation justifying why their system of government should be selected for the colonies.

Title: Me in a Box
Description: During this lesson students develop a sense of self awareness and appreciation for their own individuality and uniqueness. Students use graphic organizers to identify personality traits and collect items and pictures that represent the traits. The class has fun trying to identify to whom each box belongs before they are presented.

Title: Newscast on the Battles of the Ironclad Ships
Description: This lesson is on the ironclad ships and the battles that took place during the Civil War. Students will use the information from previous lessons to create a simulated newscast that takes place during an actual battle between ironclad ships.

Description: Students explore a variety of sources for information about voting. They evaluate the information to determine if it is fact or opinion, and then create a graffiti wall about voting.

Description: Students brainstorm a list of current conflicts and why people fight. Groups discuss and present possible solutions and create posters that promote their particular solution.

Title: What Makes a Hero?      Add Bookmark
Description: In this unit of eight lessons, from EDSITEment, students explore heroes and the traits that make them heroic. Students begin by thinking about their own heroes and list the character traits their heroes possess. Students then explore kid heroes, adults heroes, local heroes, and heroes from history, before completing one of several suggested culminating activities.
