Title: Alabama Fever!
Description: In this lesson, students will work in small groups to examine a letter describing the environment of Alabama and identify reasons which might have encouraged settlers to move to Alabama in the early nineteenth century.   Students will choose an interesting attraction of Alabama mentioned in the letter and design a postage stamp around that attraction.  This lesson was created in partnership with the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

Title: Letting Off Some Steam
Description: In this lesson, students will explore the invention of the steamboat and the role it played in the economy, transportation, and culture of the lifestyles of plantation owners, yeoman farmers, slaves, and townspeople of early nineteenth-century Alabama.  Students will compare and contrast steamboats, wagons, and stagecoaches as different modes of transportation for goods as well as people.  Students will create a steamboat advertisement to illustrate the importance of the invention of the steamboat in Alabama.  This lesson was created in partnership with the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

Title: Animal Environment and Adaptation
Description: In this lesson students will enjoy different activities focusing on how animals adapt to their environments. They will begin by researching two animals, their environment, and the ways the animals adapt to this environment. In small groups students will invent a new animal, including its environment and adaptations. Using presentation software, students will introduce their new animals to the class.

Title: Ambiguous Pictures/Abstract Art
Description: In this lesson students learn how perspective can change the meaning of art. The students will use a digital camera to take extreme close-ups of objects, thus causing the pictures to become resemble abstract art. This project incorporates art, writing and technology.

Title: Expressive Expressionist Faces
Description: Students will learn about Expressionist artists and the strategies they used in their artworks. The students will also produce an Expressionist artwork using some of those strategies as well as develop a slideshow presentation about an Expressionist artist.

Title: The Art of Rene Magritte
Description: This unit is about the artist, Rene Magritte. Students engage in hands-on research in various areas of art utilizing images, software, and Internet resources. Students will then create their own image, and work in groups to create a slideshow presentation on Magritte.

Title: Creating Holiday Cards
Description: This lesson for incorporates painting and word processing software to create a card. Students will create original art work, insert it into a document, and print it. This can be done in a classroom or a lab setting with any age from second to fifth grade.

Title: The Great Divide--A Lesson in Symmetry
Description: This is a whole group, hands-on, fun lesson where students will use knowledge of symmetry to produce art work.

Title: The "T" in Art is for Thinking
Description: This lesson provides fourth through eighth grade gifted and talented students with a research-based project, and can also be used with art and language arts students from sixth through ninth grade. Students will design and create a slideshow presentation as a vehicle for analyzing a painting. Using the art criticism process, students will describe and analyze the art elements and principles of design and provide an interpretation of a painting of their choice. Biographical information about the artist and contextual knowledge concerning the art period/movement and the associated historical times may be included.

Description: In this Science NetLinks lesson, one of a three-part series on nutrition, students use Internet resources to explore ways in which food provides energy and materials for their bodies. They research how food can affect their overall health.
