ALEX Lesson Plans
Mathematics (5), or Science (5), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
In this lesson, students will examine the amount of annual and seasonal rainfall in four cities to compare decimals to the hundredths place. Students will add and round digits to the thousandths place. Students will utilize technology by navigating to a specific United States climate website to get relatively current and accurate data. This unit was created as part of the ALEX Interdisciplinary Resource Development Summit.
Mathematics (5 - 6)
Decimal Dilemmas: Carlos the Centipede is Adding Decimals!
In this lesson, students will work in collaborative/cooperative groups to understand adding decimals. Students will use decimal grids to represent the sum of decimals. Emphasis is on using place-value, lining up the decimals and bringing the decimal down. Students will understand how important estimation of decimals is in real-life situations.
Mathematics (5 - 6)
Decimal Dilemma: Carlos the Centipede is Subtracting Decimals!
In this lesson, students will work in collaborative/cooperative groups to understand subtracting decimals. Students will use decimal grids to represent the difference of decimals. Emphasis is on using place-value, lining up the decimals and bringing the decimal down. Students will understand how important estimation of decimals is in real-life situations
Mathematics (4 - 5), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
This lesson gets students involved through the use of the calculator and computers. Students will have the opportunity to use calculators and computers to demonstrate knowledge of decimal place value and how to write decimal numbers to the tenth and hundredths place.
Mathematics (3 - 5), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
It’s My Party!
Students will learn the value of money by planning their own birthday party. By using the Internet and a calculator, students will be given the opportunity for a practical real-life opportunity to solve a problem related to money exchange.

Number and Operations Web Links
This collection of Web links, reviewed and presented by Illuminations, offers teachers and students information about and practice in concepts related to arithmetic. Users can read the Illuminations Editorial Board's review of each Web site, or choose to link directly to the sites.
Communicating about Mathematics Using Games: Playing Fraction Tracks
Mathematical games can foster mathematical communication as students explain and justify their moves to one another. In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This e-example from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 3-5 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. e-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.
