Subject: Mathematics (3 - 5)
Title: What's the Question Again?
Description: This lesson focuses on problem solving strategies with word problems that are 2 or more steps. Students are forced through the strategies to focus on the content of a problem before attempting to answer the "question" which tells what they are to solve. Visualization and communication are reinforced throughout the lesson. The strategies are generic. Included are problems for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade computation. However, these same strategies can be used for all grade levels. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Field Challenge Strategy Game: Plant Adaptations
Description: Use a game to challenge students to understand the fight for sunlight, nutrients, and water. This simple strategy game encourages students to balance ability with need in taking over an open field. Succession is the end game.

Title: Aquarium Project
Description: The class is given money to purchase fish for a class aquarium.  Students must use the size and lifestyle requirements for the fish to decide which type to buy.  Students must present their proposal to the principal in a letter.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers
Description: During this technology based lesson, students learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers by exploring websites on the Internet. Students demonstrate their knowledge of fractions by participating in practice activities on the Internet.

Title: Fractions and Recipes
Description: This is a lesson used to show how fractions are used in everyday life. Students will use the knowledge they have about fractions to change a recipe to accommodate different amounts of people. Students will enjoy navigating the Internet to locate a recipe. Students will also have the opportunity to make the recipe in class and share it with their friends.

Title: It’s My Party!
Description: Students will learn the value of money by planning their own birthday party. By using the Internet and a calculator, students will be given the opportunity for a practical real-life opportunity to solve a problem related to money exchange.

Title: Probability Paper Bags
Description: The students will use paper bags with color tiles to calculate probability of colors. This is a fun activity to use with the students. The objectives of probability are taught in a non-threatening way.

Title: Introduction to Spreadsheets
Description: Students will utilize Excel or other spreadsheet software to create both text and numerical valued columns to produce a Christmas or birthday wish list.

Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students identify fractions in real-world contexts from a set of items that are not identical. Students develop skills in problem-solving and reasoning as they think about their set and how to create new sets given specific fractional characteristics.

Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students use an actual ruler to represent various fractions as lengths. This lesson builds on work done in a previous lesson with nonstandard measurement as students use a standard instrument to measure a variety of items. Several pieces of literature appropriate for use with this lesson are suggested.

Title: Communicating about Mathematics Using Games: Playing Fraction Tracks      Add Bookmark
Description: Mathematical games can foster mathematical communication as students explain and justify their moves to one another. In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This e-example from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 3-5 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. e-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.

Title: Investigating Fraction Relationships with Relationship Rods      Add Bookmark
Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students use relationship rods to explore fraction relationships. Relationship rods are wooden or plastic rods in ten different colors. They range in length from one to ten centimeters. Each length is a different color. This work with relationships lays the foundation for work with more challenging fraction concepts.

Description: This student interactive, from Illuminations, explores several representations for fractions using adjustable numerators and denominators. Students can see decimal and percent equivalents, as well as a model that represents each fraction.
