ALEX Lesson Plan Resources

ALEX Lesson Plans
Subject: Mathematics (5 - 6)
Title: Geometry Journey
Description: In this lesson students review geometry vocabulary. The students get moving and journey through the school and take photos of items that represent geometry vocabulary. They turn these photos into a virtual field trip.

Subject: Human Services (7), or Mathematics (4 - 7)
Title: Have Your Math and Eat It, Too!
Description: In this two-day lesson, students will collaborate to create a healthy pizza using only geometric items that have been precisely measured. Students must identify the items as triangle, quadrilateral (parallelogram), or cube. Next, students will measure the items that they place on their pizza. Finally, students will bake their pizza; therefore, having their math and eating it, too!

Subject: English Language Arts (5), or Mathematics (3 - 5)
Title: What’s in a Box?
Description:   The class has been contracted to work for a box factory. They are to make cube shaped jewelry boxes. Students determine how many different nets are possible and then analyze the resulting cubes. This real-world situation helps to develop students' spatial visualization skills and geometric understanding. This lesson plan was created by exemplary Alabama Math Teachers through the AMSTI project.

Subject: Mathematics (3 - 5)
Title: The Class Quilt
Description: Students will design a 12 inch quilt square consisting of geometrical shapes. They must use their knowledge of fractions and polygons in order to create an exact 12" by 12" square.Students will use knowledge of area of a figure in order to create a quilt using their squares. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Subject: English Language Arts (6), or Mathematics (4 - 5), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: Line of Symmetry
Description: During this lesson, students will use a hands-on method to identify lines of symmetry. Each student will create individual lines of symmetry by using their name. Creations are unique and individualized for each student. Students will also learn more details about lines of symmetry by navigating the Internet. Students will do online activities to reinforce what they have learned about lines of symmetry.

Subject: Arts Education (4), or Mathematics (5)
Title: The Great Divide--A Lesson in Symmetry
Description: This is a whole group, hands-on, fun lesson where students will use knowledge of symmetry to produce art work.

Title: Communicating about Mathematics Using Games: Playing Fraction Tracks      Add Bookmark
Description: Mathematical games can foster mathematical communication as students explain and justify their moves to one another. In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This e-example from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 3-5 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. e-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.
