2016 Press Release


Girls Engaged in Math and Science University (GEMS-U) is an educational program designed to actively involve girls in STEM related activities through formal and informal learning environments.  The GEMS-U Program supports the national need to close the STEM gender gap utilizing eight teaching strategies to encourage self-confidence and elevate interest in the areas of math and science with female students.  GEMS-U teacher practices focus on these strategies to strengthen girls’ beliefs regarding their abilities in math and science.

GEMS-U Expo:
GEMS-U Expo: For the eighth year, the “Girls Engaged in Math and Science University (GEMSU) program hosted over 225 female students from around the state at the GEMS-U Expo during the month of March. The event themed “Thinking Like A . . .” was held in 2 locations, at GulfQuest National Maritime Museum, and The Birmingham Zoo. Take a look at the GEMS in action!
