Ballet and Classical Music

Overview

In this lesson, students will choreograph a sequence of ballet movements to tell a story.  

Throughout this lesson, students will: 

    • Define ballet vocabulary and movement.
    • Apply the basic concept of rhythm to classical music.
    • Compare the relationship between classical ballet and classical music.
    • Research and gather information about the history of classical ballet.
    • Describe the physical fitness benefits, entertainment, and career options for classical ballet dancers and musicians.
    • Create a storyline for a ballet.
    • Choreograph an original story.
    • Discuss the production with the audience both pre-performance and post-performance.

Antiquated Artifacts

Overview

Students will discuss how technology has changed over time and how they listen to music.  They will identify music playing devices through history.  They will listen to a 1939 recording of Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.  They will discuss how the recording sounds.  They will listen to a 1978 recording of the same piece.  They will compare and contrast the two recordings.  Finally, students will play a game to identify antiquated items.

Are You Sleeping?

Overview

Students will measure space and furniture using their feet.  They will analyze Bed (Lit à la Turque) by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard.  At home, students will sketch their bed and measure it with their feet.  In class, the students will compare and contrast the size of their bed with Bed (Lit à la Polonaise).
